Toyota sets oil change intervals based on what their own Toyota Genuine Motor Oil (TGMO) is. Their 5w20 is conventional. So they play it safe and assume all 5w20 is conventional because they know the average person knows nothing about what oil is in their engine. They would rather someone not make a habit on running conventional oil at 10k intervals

Here's a 2021 Tacoma manual. I'll also add that both of our '22 Corollas with the Dynamic Force engines have the same verbiage.

The minimum Hi Temp/Hi Shear (HT/HS) of an oil that can still offer adequate protection is between 2.6 - 2.9. This is where 0/5w20 falls. Super low viscosity GF6B oils are different story and don't apply to either of the Tacoma's engines and that would be for another discussion.

And despite what so many may think, engineers only had a partial decision in the use of 0w20. They didn't say 0w20 is "best". No, quite the opposite. They were asked can a low viscosity oil (which reduces the engine's internal drag) be safely used. They crunched the numbers and determined that it could. Think of wear protection as a spectrum. 0w20 is at the lower end, but is still within that spectrum.

0w20 is a good oil. They are all synthetic and all now meet the latest GF6A ratings for additional timing chain wear. But they are a comprise. They allow for what is considered the minimum, but still acceptable wear protection while providing a slight bump in overall efficiency (even if just on paper) to pad CAFE scores. Those scores are what drive manufacturers. Governmental pressure are ever tightening and have been for decades.

In The States, the EPA mandates that the viscosity that was used to certify engine be what is recommended. It's a recommendation, not a requirement. Toyota's verbiage that an oil of a "higher number" can be used in higher demand situations is their quiet way around the mandate and a subtle recommendation that a heavier oil would be better.

There are no "special US engines with tighter clearances" as is so often reposted over and over. That would be an inefficient way to produce engines, add unneeded complexity to assembly lines and be utterly cost prohibitive.

One need but look at the viscosity ratings of identical engines from other countries to see what the recommendations are when CAFE mandates aren't present.

Personally, I would use 5w30 synthetic, especially if I towed, hauled, wheel'd hard. But that's just me. For those who stick with the recommended 0w20......sleep well. You're fine. But for those using a 5w30 synthetic.....sleep even better.

Is everyone just ignoring the part about revving 700rpm past redline?

I mentioned that-- they state the rev limiter was disabled, but the means to disable the rev limiter has not existed until this week, and it's currently only available to a tiny select group of early adopters.

I mean do you people think there is a different engine in a Mexico Tacoma, or they added extra oil weights because they don't like Mexico and want to make there Tacoma's blow up?

They said that 3 things where being considered in rejecting the claim. Oil weight oil filter and it sounds like maybe too many rpm’s?

If you take a vehicle racing, you’re going to break it and you should be prepared to pay for it when you do. That’s basic common sense.

No clue, I didn’t post that. Was just saying what protections the M-M act does and doesn’t provide. Theoretically.

Not going to hurt your engine running 5w-20 vice 0w-20 for 450 miles. My bet is you could run it for the full cycle with no issues unless you live in a very cold climate. 0w or 5w only really matters when it's cold on initial startup. They are both 20 weight oils when at operating temperatures.

If it were my truck, I'd leave it alone and change at next interval unless living in Alaska or the Arctic Circle.

    God Bless,

If they can see 8200rpm in the ECU and the customer didn’t have the limiter removed, sounds like the guy missed a shift

Possibly. No rev limiter can prevent a mechanical over rev

For the average person....a full synthetic 5w30 covers all bases and possible scenarios.

Mexico probably has different specs, due to the warmer temps year round. NA spec has to go from south texas, to northern reaches of Canada so, they have to be "safe" for all regions, and a wide swing in temp ranges from -40 to +110. just my opinion. Ski
