U Joint and Carrier Bearing

I have a 2013 Tacoma V6 4x4 all stock. I notice chirps for like two weeks and now notice vibration when accelerating. I got under vehicle and grab drive shaft with both hands and twist and it had a play. I can see some grease splatter. I concluded that I have a bad center u-joint. Any u joint/carrier bearing brand or recommendations. Thinking of OEM but haven't priced it yet. I plan to do all u joints and carrier bearing since car has over 120k miles already. Don't want to just replace the u joints and then a year later carrier bearing fails.

 

Spicer hands down.

Get greaseable u joints and replace them all, add a couple pumps of grease every oil change and never have to replace u joints ever again.

 

I am not familiar with the Spicer brand. Who sells them? Can I buy them at an auto store or do I have to buy them online?

5-1330X is the Spicer non-greaseable U-joints and what I have on mine. They are close to 100k and will replace as preventive maintenance around 150K or when my center bearing needs replacing, whichever occurs first. The CB was replaced four years ago with

Spicer 5002334; 5002007 is the 4x4 version but either one fits. I have the 334 in my 4x4. Spicer makes the CB for Toyota and they are good quality parts. Don't know if oem U-joints are Spicer; they don't look alike.

I am not familiar with the other part #s. Spicer’s online catalog is not very user friendly.

Dana Spicer is the OEM manufacturer for Toyotas driveshafts. For the rear driveshaft you will need the

513301X for the greasable. The front driveshaft uses

Oh, wow. I didn't know that they use different part numbers u-joints for front and rears. How come O'Reilly only sells non greasable part

If you are talking about the rear driveshaft yes they all use 513301x. The front driveshaft uses 513101x. I'll fix my post to make that clearer.

In addition I will say that if you do buy them weather you do the install yourself or have someone else do it for you it would be wise to buy extra circlips of thinner sizes. The spicer ujoints come with extra circlips of different thicknesses but when I did my install I found that even using the thinnest ones it was too tight and the clips where bulging out which can cause early failure of the ujoint. I ended up buying some from Amazon which were thinner and helped with the issue.

Strange. When I look up on toyotapartsdeal it gives me the same part number for the front driveshaft ujoin from a 2007 and a 2013 but can't seem to find anything aftermarket for the 2013.

 

What carrier bearing did you end up going with, and are you happy with it? I'm seeing various options for 2nd gen 4x4 and they all have different levels of ratings/reviews, with conflicting information as some people say it will work and some say it won't (4x4):

Go with Spicer or oem toyota. I learned hard way buy not purchasing either one.

 

Spicer since they are OEM.

 

Had a shop rebuild with spicer and IEDLS carrier bearing.

I kinda wish I switched the configuration for more clearance. Found out recently you can put the slip yoke in the back for better angle back there

 

How did the repair go? I replaced the rear u-joints and center bearing on my second GEN drive shaft a few months ago. I had to go to Harbor freight and buy a bearing puller to get the center bearing off. I also couldn’t get the bolts at the differential or transmission off, so just remove the u-joints and the driveshaft. Don’t forget to mark the driveshaft.
