ARB recovery point w/ BA4x4 HiLine bumper

    Front and Rear bumpers, 5100’s, OME 887, and Icon lift.
    Is anybody running the ARB recovery point with the body armor 4x4 HiLine bumper?
    OR
    Are there any recommendations on other recovery points that aren’t so pricey (yes, yes I know that is not something you said even consider skimping on).

    The ARB Recovery Point is simply a way to get additional capability instead of the Toyota Tow Hook, or the lowly stock tiedown. It does its best to put load into the main section of the frame versus just into the radiator crossmember. Any slim or full bumper, like yours, is a much better load path as the shackle loops are right in line with the frame.

    So, yeah. I'm basically saying that you don't need the Recovery Point if you have a metal bumper.

    Really? I was always under the impression that steel bumpers weren’t ideal to use as actually recovery points but I’m really hoping that you are right and I was wrong.
    I also had been wondering the same thing but I couldn’t find any expressly stated ratings for the bumper as a recovery point yet I figured it must be somewhat robust if it can house a winch.

    That last part is exactly right. The winch pulls directly against the frame. If you look in, the shackle loops are likely connected to the winch plate and attached right on the frame horn.

    About the only upgrade that you could do there is the bumper reinforcement plates. This is one type, but you want to confirm compatibility with your bumper:


    The spread the tension load into more useful shear load.


    The ARB recovery point, because it is lower, is going to not only have the pull load into the frame, but it will have a twisting moment also that is not as good as the direct pull of the shackle loops.

    Climbed up under there. Those shackle loops are welded on and directly inline with a member that runs straight back to the frame, longitudinally but then also branches out horizontally as well.
    Thanks for the input!

    When these get tugged on I’ll make sure to double up on blankets (compared to other pulls) and that they are well-placed and weighted down nonetheless.

    For flying metal, the other thing to consider is soft shackles and / or a Hawse style fairlead:


    That would get all the metal out of the pull.

    I am aware of the soft shackles and one day I will get some, along that same line of being cost-limited somewhat, I’ll hold off and just keep reco areas clear and safe as well as blanketing and weighting the lines.
