Obviously, however it was stated that ALL EVs are for rich people which is completely false. Many EVs are just as affordable for the average buyer as an ICE car.

It’s very strange how defense the EV boys are. I would buy a Rivian if the price was similar to a Tacoma. There’s no point for me to buy an EV that will make my life more difficult unless it’s going to save me money. Being faster or towing more is not worth an extra $40K to me. For now they are just toys for people who want to show them off.

How can you compare small cars to a truck? It’s apples to oranges. If someone wants a small car they could also buy an ice version for half the price of those EVs. No one is really saving money driving EVs yet… It essentially is a rich people or those that want to show off/virtue signal game.

I have not once compared them to a truck. I responded to a comment on how EVs are for rich people by showing cars that can easily replace their gas counterparts in the same price range.

I have no skin in the EV business, I just know what facts are and get annoyed when people ignore them. Are a lot of EVs expensive, luxury models? Yes, without a doubt, but there are also EVs that are affordable for not rich people. That’s like saying only rich people can afford a F150 because the Platinum trim costs $80k when in reality you can get a base model for $35k ish.

I obviously don’t drive an EV to save the planet considering I just came from driving the worst polluting truck in production. To me it’s something new and fun that, at least for now, can fill my needs for a daily driver and be used regularly as a truck without issues. Knock on wood.

Don’t bring logic into this discussion. A Chevy Bolt will be a perfect replacement for your truck. :D

The only “affordable” EVs are little shit boxes. I own a Tacoma and 4Runner. Show me a comparable priced and size EV to both of them.

For the same price as a Tacoma and cheaper than some 4Runner trims you can get several EV SUVs. Not a truck, that has been clearly stated many times over. No one in this thread has ever said an EV truck is cheap, not once. Just the opposite in fact.

I’ve been skeptical of EVs but as a general concept they’re growing on me more and more. They might be expensive now, but the drivetrain should be essentially maintenance-free. As the tech improves, the battery packs and brushless motors should last for a life-time or more.

Solid-state and/or sodium-ion batteries should also alleviate longevity and environmental concerns.

Many people are tired of ICE drivetrains and all the constant maintenance they require (mainly just oil changes nowadays, but still). Meanwhile with stricter emissions regulations, most new ICE cars are probably going to be CVT misery-boxes, in which case they might as well be electric.

This is exactly how I feel.... if I'm gonna bother with any kind of automatic transmission in a new vehicle, these days it might as well be electric.

There is no EV comparable to a 4Runner except for an R1S which costs twice as much.

True, there is not one with the same off-road capabilities if that is an important feature for the buyer.

Me too, I think they will end up at hydrogen as a Hydrogen is technically an EV it uses electric motor to drive the vehicle just uses on board hydrogen power plant to power the EV. I would like to see more Hydrogen/Plug in hybrids i believe hyundai is working on one. The way the Hydrogen Fill stations are popping up all over CA I think it's gonna move forward fast.

Hydrogen is also more akin to fossil fuels in that I can refill/recharge by standing next to my car for 5 minutes instead of plugging it in for a matter of hours, which partially resolves one of the major concerns with using EVs for longer trips. (Only partial because we still don't have many hydrogen fueling stations.)

Which EV do you need to plug in for a matter of hours on longer trips?

Hours for a single charge is an exaggeration. Hours total over the course of a several thousand mile trip is accurate. My Rivian takes about 45 minutes from 0-80% because of the size of the battery pack. A Tesla model 3 only takes about 25 minutes to do the same 0-80% recharge.

Not gas station fast by any means but not hours.

This has been discussed many times in here. When you go on longer trips, you use Level 3 chargers. These are also known as DC fast chargers or Tesla’s Supercharger network. You never need to charge for longer than an hour, and more likely closer to 40 minutes. On a trip between Portland, Oregon and San Jose, California I make 3 stops each about 40 minutes over a 675 mile drive. So yes, this drive just barely gets into “hours” but it is also more miles than most drive in a single day and would also require more than a single 5 minute fill up.

    R1t and r1s…
Yea I think some people really need to understand the 3 levels of charging...
DC Fast (Next to most walmarts off the freeway) or Superchargers = 200 miles charged in 20-35min
Level 2 aka dryer outlet (at home over night) usually gets you 20-80% in about 6-10 hrs depending on size of the battery and state of charge
Level 1 I still don't see the point... maybe if something is free but overall you can only get about 1%-2% per hr...

Also keep in mind that most of the “articles” that are written about nightmare road-trips in EVs are because the writer has chosen to skip Level 3 charging and focus on Level 1 and 2 so that they can get a lot more clicks because otherwise it would be an uneventful trip that no one would want to read about. If they do go to a fast charger they keep it to a 50kW one, and not the 250-350kW options available.

There’s not even one the same size. I have two kids. You aren’t bringing snowboard gear for 4 people for a weekend trip in a Hyundai Ionic.
