Comparably priced? I could buy two of each of the Toyotas for the price of the Rivians.

Hence the ... they are tremendously more expensive... I am actively considering them as well but i worry about the long term in a brand new company and the 80-90K post tax entry fee in a down spiral of an economy... And this is coming from someone who has more than enough solar to pay $0 for charging... and the alternative is $6 a gallon gas...

I have chosen with my wallet ... But I am actively monitoring the current markets...

If tesla made a Tacoma alternative for 60-70k, Id get it in a heartbeat but that's simply not the case.

A electric truck the size of a VW rabbit pickup would be sweet. Could probably cut the battery size 1/3 and could be priced more reasonably.

We used to do it with 5 people in a early 90s Civic when I was a kid. It’s entirely possible but people have grown accustomed to large vehicles over the years. I do agree though in principle, I was thinking the Kia Sportage was 4Runner sized when it is actually closer to the RAV4.

To be fair, even 20-30 minutes would be a long time compared to most ICE fill-ups if the charging infrastructure doesn’t keep up with demand. The cumulative delays of all those people charging could create some snarls if more and more people make the switch to electric. I also anticipate some issues when travelling in very remote areas, as well as hauling heavy loads, etc. But the battery and charging tech should keep improving as well as the infrastructure.

For now, EVs are fantastic commuters, especially if you can charge overnight at home. I’m hoping the genuine drawbacks to EVs will be ameliorated within the next 5-10 years.

Look up the Alpha Wolf concept. That’s a nice compact pickup like back in the day. Vaporware from a company with no production capability but still cool looking.

    Yep very valid points also…

what are the insurance and registration costs ?

my teslas were $1100 and $1200 a year to register vs $700 for the Tacoma … and $60-80 a month more to insure … can anyone with a rivian to chime in ?

I love all their designs, but I doubt any of them will ever be more than 3D renders.

I’d like to see some simple, durable, no-frills EVs come out that you can repair yourself and that cost under $30k. I don’t need to go from 0-60 in under 3 seconds or control everything from a touchscreen. Maybe something body on frame for better off/road durability.

In theory an EV should be more reliable and longer lasting than even the most legendary ICE cars, but it seems like so far they’ve been quite complex, requiring software updates and in some cases, expensive repairs that can only be performed by the dealer/manufacturer.

Why can’t we have the equivalent of a Toyota Corolla or Hilux, except with an electric (or at least PHE) drivetrain? I’m hoping we will within the next decade anyway.

I wouldn’t rely on the manufacturers to do that. That seems like something more likely to happen with retrofitted ICE cars. This is a pic a friend took yesterday at SEMA.

That's pretty pricy for insurance? Did you have a tacoma and how did it compare ?

    Wow registration is cheap.

L1 is fine for my little PHEV's daily usage. 12 hours ish to get to max, but that just means parking it from 6pm - 6AM, nbd.

Insurance on my Tesla Model S Plaid is similarly bad. I’m pretty sure it is more than my other 3 vehicles combined with the Tacoma being less than $60/month.

Fair. But the price spread is so large for the comparison that these really are not competing/comparable vehicles. This is very much an apples to oranges comparison, where the only commonality is that they are 4 door trucks. It will be much more interesting to compare the ICE Tacoma to the EV Tacoma.

Agreed that level 3 charing is not well understood. A supercharger will give 175 miles in a Model 3 in 15 minutes. And since you leave home on a full charge, that is 530+ miles with one 15 minute stop. Assuming you drove 65mph the whole time, that is over 8 hours of driving with one 15 minute stop. In 8 hours, you will need to stop to eat something, take a break, use the restroom ect.

It is also worth noting that level 2 is the type typically found at shopping centers and the like. Typically not needed in public for most, because the car is always charged at home.

Level 1 is useful for overnight only and not typically to fully charge (unless doing so semi-daily), certainly not as an on-the-go charging method. Driving to the other side of the state over the mountains to visit my parents, I can plug the car at their house in a standard outlet to recharge over the course of several days while visiting and having the ability to use the car normally. If we are gone 4 hours a day, every day and the car was plugged in for the remaining 20 hours a day we are at the house, and we are visiting for for 3 days, a 110v outlet can roughly do a 90% charge. If I arrive with 20% and use 10% around town, I leave with a 100% charge. I then don't need to worry about charging the car somewhere to drive back home. I’d only charge to 90% for battery life though, since I won’t need the range. A major key to this being useful though is efficiency. A model 3 gets 142mpge (long range) - 113mpge (performance). A Rivian gets 70mpge. Because input power is fixed, this means the Rivian will only get 1/2 the range added compared to the Tesla 3 LR because the Tesla is far more efficient with that power. So for a Rivian, level 1 is less useful than other more efficient EVs, however a key to EV success is simply to have charging options. And in this scenario, maybe hitting up those public level 2 chargers while out an about would top the car/truck up if it wasn’t going to with level 1, so that when leaving the house, it would be fully charged.

    Edit: fixed silly math error
