Warming up the truck still necessary?

Around here, you can do that, but as soon as you're driving, the frost comes back if the windshield is not kind of warm.

 

You've got a 340 6-Pack Dart? Was it built that way from the factory or is it a build of yours?

 

Yeah, youre right. Runs off the center most of the time, but the outboards do contribute at idle...slightly. When you get on it and those ouboards open, its like sucking the clouds right out of the sky.
I was just trying to make a point really....any carb vs modern fuel injection...you get it. Also some people dont know what a "6 pack" is, so I just say 6 barrel.

No, I built it. It was a slant 6 granny grocery getter originally. Just a nice cruise night driver. No rust though, which is huge for a midwest car. Bought it 3 days after I got out of the Marines.

After I got out of the Marines in, yeesh, 1978, I bought a 1970 Challenger with a pedestrian 318 with a "3 on the floor" transmission. I had feelers out to a dozen bone yards looking for a 340 4-Speed combo; one yard in Chula Vista let me know they'd gotten in an AAR 'Cuda with, yup, you guessed it, a 340 6-Pack; unfortunately the rear end and 4-Speed had been destroyed in the accident. Needless to sat I bought the motor, Shaker Scoop and all, and continued my search for the rest of the drivetrain. I ultimately found a 4-Speed from a 440 Super Bee which almost perfectly bolted up; "almost" as in everything was perfect except the bore in the bell housing to accommodate the pinion cover of the big block transmission; a local machine shop made quick work of that and I was in business..., for about a year. Then some slime balls stole the car and stripped it of everything valuable and broke the rest; I mean, they went so far as to break each of the four plexiglass windows covering the instruments, every external window, and then bashed in the body panels they didn't steal. Yeah, I shed a few tears and then wanted to really-REALLY hurt someone.

 

I start it, seat belt, radio, gone......about 15 seconds

After multigrade oils came into play, no need to warm-up.

 

Actually, Cat converters suffer while idling, especially when warming up.

 

Assuming the doors weren’t frozen shut, I would usually clean the snow off the driver’s door first, crank the engine, and then run the defroster on the front window and the time it took to clean the snow off the truck is the warm up time.

 

Warming up isn't necessary. The ECU is aware of engine condition from the moment it polls its sensors (figure about 2 seconds after you get to on at the latest and usually within 1/10 of a second). It will adjust the fuel injection system to compensate for the condition of the air and engine temp. What it cannot do is adjust for oil and that's about the only reason to let it idle for about 10 to 15 seconds or so these days. And that's really only to minimize metal grinding until the oil lubes up everything. As far as the engine is concerned.

Now, on cold winter mornings, this owner has no problems with a good 5+ min warm up. I hate driving/riding in cold cars.

 

I'm in the warm up club. I'll usually let it run 2 or 3 minutes before I start driving. Little longer in winter. I feel its better for the engine. I like the ECM to be in closed loop before I give it load.

I warm up the truck until the engine temp gauge starts to move. Much better mpg than if I just turn and burn

 

Needle on the 3rd gen takes forever to move. Definitely better to drive it gently IMO. Not sure about 2nd gens.

This is the first vehicle that takes forever to get to operating temps. Not sure if it’s a good or a bad thing.

 

damn some of us do live in -40 weather okay

 

I wait until my windows are mostly defrosted.

 

This describes my wife leaving for work every morning, late or not.

 

On my scangauge, I wait until temps are over 100 degrees before I start moving

 

Does the Taco come with a block heater option that doesn’t start a fire?
