Rivnuts vs. well nuts for securing MOLLE panel

I need to secure the bottom section of a driver's side MOLLE panel in the bed of my 22 TRD Sport. Since there's no longer a storage option, I have to make my own holes for a fastener.

So... rivet nuts vs rubber expansion nuts, are they functionally equivalent, or is one better than the other (just for securing a MOLLE panel to the composite bed)?

 

I have used a couple dozen M5 and M8 rivnuts into my composite bed while building out my ACCC. They work wonders.

I would skip the rubber expansion nuts and go with the rivnuts.

 

Any particular reason you'd skip the expansion nuts?

 

Wellnuts will allow some float and damping. Rivnuts need a good installation pattern tolerance, are a firm mount, and should use thread lock.

…why not through bolt and use some rubber/plastic washers?

 

TBH I hadn’t even thought of that. How easy/hard is it to get a wrench behind the bed on the sides?

 

Not hard in the lower areas. Annoying up high in the middle and front.

 

I have to secure one fastener near the front of the bed on both driver and passenger side, might as well just use rivet or well nuts everywhere. I don’t want to waste time trying to get a nut in the right spot inside the body cavity.

 

rivnuts all the way. the rubber well nuts always pull through, or fall apart over time for me.

 

I used rivnuts for this exact application and it’s been solid for the past 1 1/2 years.
