Everything in life needs to be done with purpose.

The purpose of my running is to drink beer.
    :)

Sometimes we drink while we run. In fact its now pretty much a must have for me to have the little bottles of whiskey/bourbon to have with coke the last aid station or so for that final push towards the end. Or a beer at the top of a mountain.

Trail running/mountaineering/fast packing is where it's at bro. Come join the club.

I've been doing keto + intermittent fasting (usually a 19-20 hr fast with 2 meals a day and zero snacking) since March and absolutely love it. Sure I missed the carbs at first but the cravings go away fast.

Nice! Yes, I've noticed that, while I certainly get hungry on keto, I'm able to tolerate it for much longer than if I'm eating carbs.

Taking a swig of MCT oil is a good trick to help suppress your appetite in between meals. That's also an easy way to add calories to any meal on keto. I use it since I'm only eating twice per day, but still trying to maintain a slight calorie surplus since I'm lifting weights.

Ah Jesus, are we discussing Keto? I call bullshit on any diet that doesn't allow apples and bananas. :crapstorm::anonymous::boink:

    Bahaha

You can still eat them just maybe not a whole one.

If you are training a lot or you are able to time your consumption of carbs right you can still eat 50-100g of carbs a day and still maintain ketosis.

If I’m running 40+ miles a week and lifting I could up my carbs to 50g a day easy and still show up on a blood meter as in ketosis.

On keto I usually end up missing peas, carrots, beans, apples, and bananas. Lol

This. Also eating your carbs last during a meal greatly reduces how much insulin they spike in the blood.

Yeah all depends on activity level. There is also TKD Targeted Keto Diet and CKD Cyclical Keto Diet.
TKD is where you eat carbs preworkout and CKD you have basically a refeed day (low fat high carb) every 7-10 days.
It helps athletes perform better while still adhering to keto and maintaining ketosis.

If you time carbs before a lift session or 90+ minute cardio session honestly you can probably do 30-50g of carbs preworkout and burn it all up.

However with these methods intermittent fasting is recommended to help the ketosis.

Keto Gains is a site that helps you learn about ketosis for athletes/fairly active folks that breaks down the science.

Ooof! Never mind! Longest I've ever run was 6 miles and that was MANY years ago.

Farewell doughnuts! I'll miss ya! :D

    Little vent/rant session incoming:

Getting older, I've really struggled with accepting how much longer it takes me to heal from injuries and recover from really stressful workouts. I had a significant hyperextension of my right knee about a month ago. Took a week off from doing any leg work other than light stretching. I've been keeping it kinda light since then but am still feeling stiff/weak when I first bend down. Irritating as f... :annoyed:

    That is all. :D

    That sucks man I’m sorry.

But I think for a “significant hyperextension” it would take time. Are you seeing a PT?

They really help give you targeted exercises to speed healing.

Obviously as long as it doesn’t hurt try some eccentric quad stuff (quad extention, leg press). One leg at a time. And maybe hip work. Stability going down is hip and quad. For some odd reason traumatic knee injuries result in quads forgetting how to do their job.

    I wish you speedy healing!
I don’t know how OLD you are but honestly the guys I know that have hyperextended climbing or skiing. Even in their 20s takes a hot minute to heal.

    Thanks!

No PT other than my own regimen. I think I'm going to back off a little more, i.e. lighter load but every day, and see if that makes a difference.

At 54, I know I need to take 'er easy once in awhile...

Same. I've got a lower back injury that I need to be mindful of. It had been nearly a year since I aggravated it at the gym but found out 2 weeks ago that lighter weight/higher rep squats while maintaining strict form can still tweak my back ... so I'm going to try dumbbell goblet squats as a replacement.

I have to brag. My niece went to state this weekend for cross country and made 18th at 20:03.

I admit I man cried. Super proud uncle here.

    5K?

What's your mileage strategy on running shoes? I have always targeted about 700 miles or so then replace. The outside of the heels is usually getting pretty wacked by then.

I have to admit, I buy cheap trail running shoes and use them mostly on pavement. The last few pair have been Sketchers. I like the extra support and cushion. I have a light pair I only wear for races.

I bought expensive shoes when I was younger, but never really saw any benefit over cheaper ones. I mean, the year after they are $120/pair, they are $75,...

I just skip the initial depreciation and buy them later!

700 miles?? Wowzer. I replace mine at 400 or so. I also run trail shoes on the road. If it works don't mess with it. :)
