I didn't think it was typically recommended to tow in OD anyway.

If towing, I would drive an automatic all the time in S4. It’s geared pretty high compared to the 6MT and in S4 you’ll have enough torque and still be driving faster than a 6MT equipped truck.

Like my Miata? Houston to Rocky Mountains and back. Made it through 2-3ft of flood water in north Texas (only rain of the year). Only struggled to keep 70mph going up Monarch Pass.

Yesterday was the first time I hauled my sxs for a good distance. I found the truck was shifting a lot then would rev to like 4k going up a small hill. The sxs and trailer might be 2000lb. I couldn't imagine a camper or something else that's 4-5k lbs

Yup, most of the time this happens if the transmission is in Drive. The owner's manual recommends towing with ECT and S4 S5 or lower

What does the Tacoma owner's manual actually say? The Tundra one is vague but seems to imply S4 is only for certain scenarios.

Similar to the Tundra. We've debated endlessly on whether that means to be in S4 all the time or only when going downhill.

The moral of the story: the manual says, "do not use the transmission in D, use ECT and S5 (or lower) for towing".
