I was wondering if it was the similar one in nearby North Andover, which is a Wheelabrator plant.
In the summer of 1985 the Wheelabrator plant was just starting up - going by the name of Signal Resco or Signal Environmental Systems , and I, along with a couple other UNH engineering students, spent part of the summer as engineering interns gathering data about the plant’s operations for the regulatory approvals.
Very impressive operation.
I remember having the truckers dump their loads on the floor in front of the pit so we could estimate the content makeup- say 50% household waste, 50% office waste- which was used to estimate the energy content in order to tune the system.

Also spent a lot of time in the crane operators’ booth recording the weight of each load the five fingered cranes picked up to place in the hopper. If the operator got a good grab it would be more than 5000#. The crane head itself weighed about that much, and was on about 100’ of cable at full extension- a big pendulum.
The good operators could pick out a refrigerator or water heater with the tips of the crane, fling it out onto the floor in front of the pit, then quickly stop the swinging and get back to work.
One operator wasn’t so good, and would routinely bang that 5000# head against the walls or the steel cage protecting the booth we were in.

A few noteworthy events, such as the times something large like a refrigerator or water heater would hide in the middle of the load and end up jamming the hopper. This would interrupt the fuel flow, and the fire would start to work its way up to the level we were at. We’d run out there and all pull and pry to remove the obstruction.
Late one night some kids apparently threw a pipe across the power lines at the nearby substation where all 30+ MW of the plant’s power fed.
The plant suddenly had nowhere to send its power, and the bypass condenser failed to cut in. As a result, the system started venting steam, nearly running the system dry. We worked our way down the 4-5 stories from the crane booth in the dark, and exited the building directly under the venting steam which sounded like a jet engine right over our heads.
All in all a memorable summer.
