a wrecked '03 TRD DC w/ 180k just went for $5k at abetter.bid in Redding, CA

I figured with the prices I'm seeing for used diffs, I'd be better off buying a wrecked TRD at auction and swapping parts (then I could get some seats and windows and maybe some other stuff out of the deal), but that one really threw me

here's when I wish I was back in VT where stuff like this pops up all the time:

So those of you(us) with mechanical speedos (95-97) have you had issues with yours in the cold? I have a new cable but my god it slips a lot in the morning when it's cold. Was thinking about taking the actual speedo apart to lube it and clean to see if that would help?

Another swap update... played 1v2 with the transfer case/transmission jack today. Finally was able to mate up the transfer case. I never, ever want to take that damn thing back down. I don't know if its the position switches I put in or if its just normally a pain in the ass to tighten the top two bolts (tcase to trans) but that was . Hardly any space to work in and without a swivel on the end of an extension, I'd still be out there trying to tighten it up.

Tomorrow connect the trans cooler lines, reinstall the starter, fill the transmission/transfer case and connect the drive shafts and call it done.

Good work. I have to take my tcase down again b/c I noticed some oil leaking out between the case and the trans. Not sure which seal (tcase or trans) is leaking, but one of them needs replacing. Sucks, given that I've had both out for other work in the last 11 months. :gah:

Oh, and the rear diff is leaking at the seal between the carrier (is that the right term?) and axle housing. I've got some FIPG that I bought for the Diamond housing that I've never installed, so I'll use that to seal it all up again. Anything tricky in that process besides making sure that everything is clean?

Never had an issue with my Taco, but have with old Honda motorcycles. The only solution that worked for me was a new cable, but I'd absolutely try cleaning and lubing yours up, also check to make sure it's routed well with no pinch points. The cable is where the majority of the drag comes from in my experience. You could always lube the gears on both ends, too. I highly recommend a cable lube tool, if you don't have one. Makes it way easier to get a good amount of oil in there quickly, and it's a cheap little tool.

You mean just the diff in the housing?

Clean all the old fipg off and then just don't glob it on so it bleeds a ton back into the diff. But you don't want to little. Better to place it more towards the outside then the inside. But usually just a decent bead is all you need.

Yeah it's a new cable. Old one was broke.

But it sounds like it is spinning on the inside of the speedo itself. Like the square end of the cable is spinning in the drive point if that makes sense. Once the truck is warm. It's fine. But it takes it a while for the speedo to get warm.

picked up the frame swap parts for the 1998. just waiting on one more thing for that.. and have more coming.

replacement kits, brake lines, leaf springs, upper arms, lower arms, ball joints, body mounts, front springs, shock mounts, etc. i wasnt going to do all this.. but my boy hooked me up for helping him with his sisters car. total cost to me was... pennies compared to list.. and most of the expensive stuff isnt here yet. be trickling in over the week.. just need to order new 4600s and wait for the frame. then the 1998 will rock again.

I'd definitely get in there and try to fix it, if that's the case. I've experienced that same issue, and it wasn't long after that speedo completely fell apart. Needle came off, faceplate split in half... I figure when it stopped working correctly it just vibrated like hell until stuff broke. Way easier to replace it on a motorcycle

before anyone asks.. im keeping the 1998 stock. no need for more lifted ones. its a supercharged manual with 94k miles. fix up the body a wee bit and enjoy it as is. (but with a haltech most likely)

the parts truck having alot of the suspension i want for the 95 kept funds open.

Yeah. Well will try it. I'm pretty good at ripping it out now. Still not fun but not terrible.

4runner springs might play a roll. eh this ones fine with 4600s. i've got the extra icons to toss on the 95. my 01 has the icons. and the 02 is getting sold whenever i get around to swapping its frame anyway. this 98 will just be the one i dick around town with when im bored.. i dont need all these trucks.. but i kinda fell in love with how unmolested this 1998 is. lol, other than the dog hair, the interior is like new in this thing.

this swap on the 98 got pushed up in priority due to the availability of parts.. and well someone owing me a favor.. all these parts i got plus the ones coming
