I heard a story about that a while back. Can't remember all the details but one of the challenges for most brands is having to be compatible with every manufacturers' vehicles.

People have asked me about EVs. I don't know why, maybe I have expressed my opion on them. They ask if the chargers, and charging cables are universal. I tell them, far as I know every manufacturer is different. They all agree that is dumb.

The industry should have agreed to all use the same type of charger. Instead time and money will be wasted drafting legislation to solve the problem of non standard EV charging hardware.

Everyone in the US with the exception of Tesla and the Nissan Leaf use a CCS/SAE plug.

They include one if you want one. Probably decided on that as a weight savings and cost cutting measure for those who won’t actually take the truck off-road ever. It might be marketed as off-road ready but much like the Tacoma most of the Rivians will just go back and forth to work and the grocery store and never see dirt.

But that doesn't work with their narrative. How dare you! :p

    Thanks for that information.

Tesla is the dominant EV brand in the US, and everyone else uses CCS/SAE. Great two choices. Can't even own a Tesla, and an EV pick up Rivian or Ford and use the same charger for both vehicles.

I got a flat in my Tacoma a year or so ago on my way to work. It was a sawzall blade in the sidewall. How the hell does that happen?

Important to note you can charge a tesla on any ccs charger with an adapter.

Is the adapter included with the car?

It seems most of these charging problems aren’t due the plug/adapter it’s the charger being broken or not providing enough power. Plus you don’t know this until you have already driven to the charger and wasted time and range.

Tesla is the chosen EV for a reason.

Is just the Tesla superchargers that have the Tesla only outlet?

Presumably the Tesla outlet is also the one used for charging the Tesla at home.

Does CSS charge at a slower rate than the Tesla charger at home.

I still think a simple onesize fits all approach would simplify the charging process, and that should be the best option that is available.

I have never seen an ice that you could pump gas into the tank no matter what variable there was between vehicle brand and gas station.

    Edit

You still need the adapter to charge the Tesla?

Tesla should have a 2nd CCS outlet on the car cmon Elon.

Tesla chargers should work on the other brand. I presume Tesla chargers are better, provide faster charge times, and have a wider network of charging stations.

Plugs have no bearing on charging speeds. Charging at home is just about 5-7kwh depending on your electrical system.

Charging at public chargers is dictated by both your car and the maximum output of a charger… for example the highest possible ccs output is 350kw which is insane …. That’s like running 70 home ac units at once. Most cars top out at 150 or so… teslas take about 200-250kw… which is the fastest in the biz

One of the problems I’ve seen is the direct result of people being sloppy and careless. The plugs are heavy duty plastic but people manage to drop and break them. Self induced problems unrelated to the charging infrastructure.

Gas station construction companies can build a new gas station. From the tanks up to the canopy in 30 days or less.
