Winters here are mostly temperate and very rainy but over the last ten years we're seeing colder and harsher winters with usually a week or two of sub 20ºF temperatures which used to be rare.

There are green tomato varieties but generally when people mention "green tomatoes" they mean unripened red tomatoes. Frying them doesn't really alter their inherent taste (I believe)...it just masks the taste with fried breadcrumbs. I suspect you can fry dirt and it would be palatable.

Not sure the variety of that ginormous tomato but it's shaped like a Roma variety...and it's either been fertilized with steroids or that person has very tiny hands.

 

Weather here is a mixed bag treats. We never know what to expect.

At first I thought the same. Green tomatoes are unripened red tomatoes. I then learned that there're variety of green tomatoes.

Does these tomatoes have the potential of growing to this size in your climate?

 

Sweet corn planted the first week of September?

Some a little under ripe but for the most part delicious.

 

Nice! How much you end up with?

 

We tried 1 yesterday and 10 edible ears today. 5 more had worms right through the husk in the middle of the ear.

Of the 24 seeds we planted that’s not a bad little experiment for late season corn. If I do it again next year I’ll keep on the DE a little more, there were a lot of pests.


I’ll have to go back through my notes and see what variety it was. IIRC 60-70 day corn and that’s right where we were.

My wife and I both think this is the one we planted but we could be wrong!

 

Any taste difference between the 2? When I tried ripe corn vs pulled early corn I prefer the ripe. There was something different. Probably not as sweet.

 

Also in the PNW

We late planted parsnips, carrots, asparbroc (brocolini like) - been eating the carrots - so far better than spring summer. Yes we had 26°F or so. But we are wind protected from the Fraser river outflow

 

Unripe corn tastes bland and is not juicy. Once the kernels are mature there is only a few days before the skin starts to become tough. In my experience sweet corn over ripe tastes bad too because of the kernel skin toughness. I am a sweet corn snob.

 

If you let it sit too long, its starchy

 

Ok now we have a larger pest.

WHAT the hell is digging surface holes at the base of my young fruit and even a planted oak and Austrian pine trees? I mean really digging! Dirt and mulch flung about.

Holes are 18" LONG x 12" wide and about 10-12" deep? Not some small animal. I see chickens roam by. I see coyotes. I've seen opossum and raccoons. None digging. WTAF????

 

You have ground hogs there?

 

No pretty sure no.

 

Only thing i know that digs is badger, ground hog, coyote, fox? Or a feral dog

 

And armadillo, but those are smaller, about 3"x3"x3". I had one that dig 100+ holes on the property, before he went away.
Could be a racoon looking for bugs?
