The 'dark-when-you-go-to-work-and-when-you-leave-work' part of the time change is what messes me up, I get the winter blues pretty bad every year. I will be struggling to hit the Winter Solstice, then emotionally hanging on until March when we start seeing some more light coming back into the day.
Glad to hear that you're doing well with the recovery! You should be able to go out on Veterans Day and enjoy some free grub from any of the places that treat us to a meal!

This was probably the last of the nice weather to get stuff done, I didn't get as much as I wanted to this weekend but it's still some progress. A quick run across the joists with the 4' level tells me that I have a lot of planing to do.

SAD.... got me really bad when i was in Alaska. Haven't been the same since. My "happy light" helps. Most of my winter blues are due to a lack of camping but the light situation does suck.
One of these lights. Our Costco usually gets some in this time of year. I keep mine next to my desk, keep it on all morning and it does seem to help

Thanks for the link. The SAD is a reality, at least for me. You're the 1st person that I have chatted with that has had 1st hand experience with it. I was diagnosed with it when I lived in Seattle in the 90's, having moved from San Diego after my service was over.

when i was in AK we only got maybe 4 or 5 hours of sunlight IF it wasn't super cloudy which is was most of the time. never before had i experienced SAD and didn't realize what it was until much later on. lots of other things going on at the time that contributed to depression so I was a whole mess. I know now that at least some of it was SAD. I would automatically gravitate to a certain spot on the couch every day when the sun was shining in the south facing windows and directly onto one particular spot. Never made the connection that I needed to sit there and my brain was just guiding me there, wasn't something I consciously thought about doing, just ended up there day after day. Now I know why I wanted to sit in the sun. Its not as bad for me now but i still get a bit of a funk so i try to do whatever i can to cope. My happy light, try to get out for a walk mid day when its sunny

I always thought that it was funny when I'd talk to people who were in Seattle in the winter, as an escape from the Alaskan winter! I couldn't wait to take a trip to visit friends in Phoenix, usually in February. The AZ locals were bundled up in "winter" jackets and ugg boots because it was only in the 70's.. I was the fool running around in a tee shirt and shorts and trying to find a pool that was open to go for a swim. It took me a while to realize that I was craving/missing the sunlight that was non-existent in Seattle.

Our Costco has OTT Lights now which are great for eye strain but not as good for SAD. I have one in my office along with a bottle of vitamin D. Time change is brutal here…I’m sure others have it worse but for me the struggle is real.

Wow, Planning, you're really striving for perfection with this deck!

I can tell you from first-hand experience 80% of the people in Western Washington are depressed. :help: It's one of the top reasons I don't live there anymore. Docs told me to take D3-5000, and I have been taking it for over a decade now.

how's your family fairing out here? these last couple of storms have been wreaking havoc in NW MT with power outages and stuff.

I’m in a new “old” building this year. It’s all brick with two fluorescent lights and one small window facing south that is shaded by large fir trees. It’s reminiscent of a mental solitary confinement cell. I will definitely purchasing a “happy light” soon!

but you got a window! I remember all of the offices at my schools didn't have any windows at all. The HS principal's office was basically in a basement. Same for all of the counselors.

Ehh, it's out of necessity. Out of the 14 Joists, I don't think that there's 3 that are exactly the same width. I had some that were 7-5/8" thick on one end, 7 3/8" on the other. Others with bad crowns/bows.. the wood supply is just pure sh*t right now. I did manage to spy a few pieces in a bundle at HD that were marked "Grade #1 prime" so I dug them out of the skid and replaced a few of the worst ones that I had. Those new boards were exactly 7 1/2", no bad crowns or bows an a tight end grain. I'm afraid that the 5/4 decking will really amplify the unevenness if I don't do some planing- which brought me to my newest purchase, a Bosch planner. I will need it when I get back to replacing some subflooring this winter, so it was a good purchase.

I forgot about the D3-5000, I will look for some of that. I hate it when I get into that Dec-Feb funk, nothing gets me out of that terrible state of mind.
