i enjoyed the video and learned something. thanks for posting.

do i trust engineers to do it right, the first time, all the time? absolutely not. most engineers i worked with understood theory as you would expect but knew very little about the actual use and how-to maintain.

in a prior career i worked for a few companies that manufactured complex equipment and then followed it to the field to install, start-up, and train customers on the operation and maintenance.

many times the initial engineering was a cluster **ck, and i was forced to make modifications to get it to fit the application and function properly.

i see similar issues with the tacoma and suspect the cause is similar as well.

if other manufacturer's designed and built some of the F-ups that the turd gen Tacoma is known for, many on here would call them out. the routing of the exhaust pipe is a perfect example. what some refer to as 'mods' are actually aftermarket improvements because of toyota's poor engineering and design.

I'll take a well experienced and trained tech.

Unlike an engineer, a well trained and experienced tech, has actually seen the bumbles and mistakes that the engineers made up close and personal, and instead of theorizing or how they should work and scratching their head as to why this is happening. A tech just makes it work and fixes it.

While not mutually exclusive, these statements definitely stand to contradict each other. You blindly trust engineers, yet engineers and techs that put themselves on a pedestal are untrustworthy?

As an engineer with experience in product development (albeit a different industry), there’s no room for ego. Learn what you can from your mentors and fellow engineers, but don’t take for granted the tech that has seen the product of your mentor’s design in real world application far more often and for longer than any testing had exposed the engineer to.

I'm thinking taco god made that video sometime back. Hopefully toyota has fixed that timing cover oil leak issue by now.:fingerscrossed: Even my old gen1 tundra at 19 years and 300k miles never leaked a drop of oil.....well engine oil that is. Steering rack was another issue.

I'll just treat my tacoma like an old chevy, regular dino oil and some of that stop leaking additive stuff every now and then.

I've worked with engineers. Generally the senior ones get it right the first time. When it goes to the bean counters in the front office thats where stuff can go wrong. Having a good tech in these cases is priceless. I knew a ford tech at a nearby dealership, now retired that made their automatics work better than the engineers at ford designed them to by altering, and adding parts to them.

As long as you're putting in new oil and putting in the correct amount along with whatever weight rating it says in the engine bay you are fine which is what he said in the video I posted. He even says the toyota oil is the same as mobil one.

Any new oil is better than no oil or having old oil. Doesn't matter what brand it is.

When I think about oil changes, it's not the quality of the oil I'm concerned about. I agree modern specd oil will last a while. The way most people drive doing alot of stop and go will wear out oil quicker. Also if someone doesn't drive much, getting to that 10k interval seems like a while or if it's 1 year. Let alone if you're using the tacoma as a truck and hauling or towing.

So my redneck engineer in me wonders... since the exact area of the oil leak is identified in the video the OP posted, why not just clean the outside seam of the timing chain cover squeaky clean, and then dap a bit of JB Weld over it?

You're making the same assumption of usage as that mechanic. We can only really speak for ourselves regarding usage.
His recommendation for 5K OCIs is a catch-all and errs on the side of caution. He has no real data to back it up.
I do agree with him on one point; it's your vehicle, do what you think is right for you.

    It probably wouldn't stay there.

What pisses me off is if you watch the video it's obviously a design defect in that every one of them leaks in the exact same spot. It should be a recall or an extended warranty but since Toyota is now 1980s GMC nope, just push the customer out the door and cross your fingers his engine doesn't leak or his paint doesn't fall off within the first 36k miles.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Y’all wana know why I don’t fully trust engineers? Just go look at all the issues on the new tundras.

electronic control waste gates with stamped steel that holds the rod can be a cunt hair off and cause total failure of the waste gate? Nice

Engineers on forums are the worse. Just because they have an engineering degree (that they love to tell everyone about) means they must be the resident expert. Their engineering degree could be completely different then then topic being discussed but still claim to be 100% correct with clearly the wrong answers.

Us engineers are definitely not perfect. The owners manual and maintenance guide are written by the marketing department. Engineers make recommendations, but the final decisions on what gets printed is NOT engineering.

Engineers and mechs both get it wrong sometimes. Take what you learn from both and make your own educated decision based on your usage and willingness for risk.

And don't trash anyone else for THEIR decision.
