Story Time With Gritto

In the Summer of '71, I was in the YCC (Youth Conservation Corps)
We did stuff like repainting cannons, clearing brush, etc, at Gettysburg National Military Park.

We stayed at Camp Eisenhower, an old motel just across the Emmitsburg Road from the Peach Orchard.
It's gone now (bulldozed) along with the Stuckeys that was nearby.
The Park Service spent many years buying up all the tourist traps on the battlefield.

Anyway, there was this old guy Colonel Jacob Sheads, who was a Ranger and licensed battlefield guide.
He'd come in the evenings and on Saturdays to tell us stories.
Apparently the idea was to educate us, but he was also very entertaining.

He told us stories about Devil's Den (the name pre-dates the battle)...
Ghost stories, mostly about encounters with soldiers who don't know they're dead.
All kinds of stories to do with the battlefield.

Soooo... to get to the point...

He told us that in 1863 Black Vultures were not found north of Virginia.
But some followed the armies north to Gettysburg... and stayed.
To this day, they roost in the cliffs on the east side of Big Round Top.

I had a close encounter with a young one.
At the base of Big Round Top is the Weikert Farm.
They do interactive stuff there to show visitors farm life in the 1860s.

In 1971, it served as a residence for a park ranger, and the barn was used for storage.
One day a few of us boys were given the job of getting some fence rails out of the upper part (hay mow) of the barn.

What did we find there?
A damaged slatted vent high up in a gable and lots of poop on the floor.
Plus...
A young, unfledged Black Vulture

He didn't like us being there.
He took a big messy crap and vomited.
I dunno which was stinkier.

We got the job done pronto and didn't stick around

 

Nobody else can make great prose from buzzard poop and vomit. You da man!

 

Morning, Whats!

 

The teacher asked Little Johnny, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Little Johnny answered. "I wanna become a billionaire, find me a fine bitch, give her a Ferrari, a condo in Hawaii, loads of cocaine and bang her every day like a screen door in a hurricane."

The teacher, flustered, decided to just move on.
"Umm, okay. And how about you, Sarah?"

"I wanna be Johnny's bitch!"
