This deer has been a LONG time coming for me. This is the first deer I've taken in about 8 years and it was so worth the wait. I thought someone had put a curse on me or that I had just plain forgotten how to hunt. On top of that, this year has been bad news after bad news.

Opening day of Muzzleloader season November 5th in Northwestern, NC. It's hot and humid as ever, about 70°F or better. Overcast with drizzling rain on and off. Not the ideal opening day of Muzzleloader season.

The time is 10:00am. I'm hunting about 100 yards deep in the woods. The woods are dead and I've only seen 4 squirrels by this point and have honestly lost hope for the morning. My dad had told me just a few days prior, Wednesday November 2nd, that he had "seen a big one" in the field at 10:30am, that he didn't get a chance to shoot at. So I think to myself, let's stretch my legs and change the scenery for the last hour or so of the morning. So I climb down and walk to the stand on the opposite side of the field where my dad had seen the "big one". Hoping that by some miracle, he would return around the same time.

My wife starts texting me at about 10:45am, asking when I would be leaving. I tell her soon probably, I'm ready to go, just waiting on dad. We normally call it a day around 11-11:30am, depending on how the morning has been. By 10:49am, I'm standing, with my back to the field, phone in my hand, just waiting on a text from dad saying "see you at the truck". When all of a sudden, I get that feeling. That indescribable "6th sense" feeling that something is happening around you.

I casually turn around to face the field, not expecting to see anything and am truly shocked at what I see. I see what appears at first to be a horse with horns, no more than 40 yards directly in front of me. In full strut, perfectly broadside, looking in my general direction but not right at me. It was truly like a picture out of a magazine, pure beauty. Keep in mind I'm still standing with my phone in my hand. All in one motion, I throw my phone in my pocket, shoulder the rifle, flip the safety off, get the crosshairs on the sweet spot, and as I see his eyes lock onto me, I yank the trigger as fast and as hard as I can.

A boom rings out and a cloud of white smoke fills the air. As it clears out, I see the deer running away. My heart drops as I question, was it a good enough shot or did I even hit it at all!?!? He runs about 50 yards and I seem him start stumbling and ultimately crashes. I scream as loud as I can, WOOOOOOOOOO!!!! IT'S HIM!!!!! My dad is hunting only about 60 yards from this stand, on the other side of some woods so he can easily hear me and yells back to me. I yell back, BRING THE TRUCK!!!

I wish I had gotten some better pictures, but I was in such shock, I couldn't even think. This is probably one of the biggest deer I've ever seen in person, let alone shot! The neck on this deer was massive! He was certainly in full rut.

    November 5, 2022 @ 10:50am
    Knight Muzzleloader, 50cal
10 pointer, 9 on the main frame and 1 nub at the base that holds a ring so I count it!
NC Wildlife officials determined him to be 3.5 years old & weighed 183lbs.
They commented that this deer was a prime example of what a whitetail should look like with regards to overall health, size, frame, build, stature etc.. So that definitely made me feel even better.

Featuring my dad and his 2012, TRD Sport, DCLB, 4x4. He was probably more excited than me.
