Very rarely are things black and white in an imperfect world, but shades of gray.

I should also mention that one of my best friends is a full time Youtuber. He's in the business of views and clicks. And so is this guy.

With 450k subscribers and 100k views on this video, this guy is making a pretty penny every month. And he is designing both his title and his thumbnail to generate those views. This is why his video is titled with caps and vagueness: TOYOTA V6 OWNERS! This is The Biggest Problem with The 3.5L V6 Engine generates more views than Toyota 3.5 Timing Cover Leak and Replacement

But one will be what is considered a 10/10 (worst performing video of his last 10) and the other will be a 1/10 (best performing video of the last 10). Both have the same content, which I'm not speaking for. It's sometimes just good to know what's going on from the creator's side. Title and thumbnail matter IMMENSELY. There are whole workshops dedicated to designing these for clicks.

100%. Its got nothing to do with being dishonest or click baity on purpose. The fact is that if you want your youtube channel and videos to get clicks, then you have to play into the youtube algorithm.

There’s a lot of KNOWLEDGEABLE people on this site and are likely not an engineer or mechanic. I’m an engineer and take a lot of advice from this site as well as other places.

I also strongly agree with Garrett that ultimately it’s marketing who decides what gets recommended. Engineers actually over design and under promise so for some of you who believe its the engineers who are arguing for the 10k OCI’s certainly don’t know how engineers operate.

Toyota is not unlike every for-profit business. Their top three goals are likely…
    1. Shareholder value,
    2. Meet sales projections, and
    3. Mitigate warranty claims.

Couldn't agree more that it's definitely another thing to consider: bottom line. Do you trust that book in your glove box to last beyond the warranty claim? Again - tolerance for risk. All should just be factors in an individual's decision.

Also remember folks: your truck has been VALUE Engineered by the manufacturer. Meaning, the end result of the design is the one Toyota could afford to mass produce and make a profit. That's not on the Engineer per-se. The Toyota trained tech has been trained how to repair this machine per the same manufacturer's recommendations on how to keep the value engineered part running.

My only quip about TCCN is that his titles and topics lead you to believe there's something majorly wrong with your vehicle, when it's really something you either need fixed under warranty or something you need to watch out for when doing regular maintenance.

*PS: I also can't fully trust people who say they prefer sedans over other vehicles*

We like to be conservative on both accounts and design in margin, but there can be, and often is other forces at work demanding that margin be removed.
Rarely if ever, is margin returned to a design. And further, to handle design issues, software is thrown at a problem to mitigate problems - specifically in the case of the 787, engine placement, stall, and the automation that pilots weren't trained on.

It is true that it usually is an engineering issue, I've also seen consumption problems reduce or even go away with a change in oil weight, sometimes even changing the brand can effect it.
I also wouldn't run a dino oil or a brand like say supertech for a 10k oci, well they may meet the spec, its just asking for trouble. Id' call mobil one the minimum standard for the 10k oci on a toyota, as they make the toyota brand oil.

IMO, that would still fall under a design/production problem; not a maintenance frequency problem.

How do you define "dino" oil? Group 2 or 3? You'd be hard pressed to find 0W20 in Group 2. Most of what you'll find is Group 3; whether or not it is synthetic is debatable...IMO it is not. Even something like Penzoil Platinum is a Group 3...They're all hydrocrack refined. Unless you step up to a Group 4 like Redline or Amsoil they're all "dino".

As far as Mobil...VOAs show the additive package in Toyota to be a bit different. This kind of circles back to your assertion that a different oil can curtail consumption. So, which to use?

As far as intervals...If I still lived in California, I could easily see myself hitting 5,000 miles in one month.

I've done my research and made my decisions. This is all really just rhetoric to encourage others to do the same. As I said earlier, it's rarely black or white...

Anyone want to offer a response to my initial query:

"Would the Tacoma be the only vehicle with the 2GR-FKS variant 3.5L V6 that would not involve removing the engine to fix the problem? Due to the longitudinal mount in the Tacoma?"

Lexus uses forward gr engines as well.

For Tacoma you have to remove the front diff and steering rack to remove the timing cover, it’s a pain.

4runner and fj with dual vvti are just like 3.5 Tacoma.
