I'm thinking about getting one as a cheap way to throw a Yakima cargo box on. I'm seeing a bunch for sale for much lower than the $340 Toyota Parts Center lists it for. The pics from other sellers look exactly like the OEM racks. I plan to ask before buying, but any thoughts?

I want to carry the Yakima because I already have it, and it will fit skis and snowboards better than my short bed, plus the lock. I plan to carry a canoe at times too. I'd probably prefer a bed rack over my softopper, or even a more off road style roof rack. So any suggestions appreciated. But, for now, I'm looking at the cheapest alternative to get the Yakima up top.

I looked at a bunch on Amazon and other places which were dirt cheap, but after reading here and there, it seems that quite often these sellers are using an OEM picture and shipping a non-OEM product. Lots of reports of poor fitment, missing fasteners, etc. I have the OEM, and it fits perfectly. If you do go with one of that style, ensure you put a good glob of silicone or similar sealant over all the through-cab fasteners. I missed that step on one bolt when I did my 2018... my passenger footwell turned into a swimming pool in a heavy rain!

Any problem with the shark fin when you put the bars across?

Nope, the OEM (and I assume OEM-style knockoffs) clear the 'fin without issue.

For reference, I bought an oem roof rack off of a 2019 for my 2nd gen for $75. Just check Facebook marketplace and craigslist regularly, someone will be getting rid of one somewhere.

I'm about to list my OEM roof rack I just removed. It is just taking up space in my garage.

How much does your canoe weigh? Because the OEM roof rack rating is pretty low.. 75-100lbs.. might be better off looking for some gutter mount Yakima or Thule bars.

    Not
Not sure, but I doubt over 100. I was thinking the OEM was rated to 150, but I just checked and it's just 100. Will need to make sure on the canoe. Good call.

Only 75lbs evenly distributed. This is why I am just going to throw a Prinsu rack on my topper!

Our 16 Kevlar is 62lbs.. but royalex or glass boats can get pretty heavy.

The best part of the OEM rack is how it folds away, the worst parts are the low payload and the cost..

It's my dad's canoe. He thinks it's 85 lbs and that sounds right. We used to get it up on a suburban single handidly.

You might want to check out mounting Rhino ditch tracks which are roof tracks like Thule and Yakima but fit into the moulding channel. Practically invisible when you don’t have anything mounted and very strong. I modified a set to fit my access cab so that I could carry long lumber or ladders. I’ve had several hundred pounds of 20’ 2 x 6 decking, 20’ lvl beams, Ipe 4x4’s with no problems using Thule square bars, tracker towers, and QR landing pads. I keep the bars stowed on a rack in the shell as I notice a drop in mileage if I leave them on.

I stand correct. Product description on Amazon says 75lbs. Still, 100lbs is not much.
