The one who dies with the most stuff wins.
That's a workaround, not a solution. But it does prevent the problem of rust forming between the drum and the shoes.

Work around- (dictionary) find away to overcome or avoid a difficulty or problems.

Solution -dictionary , a means of solving a problem or difficult situations. An action or process of solving a problem.

Thank you for pointing out the difference. In my case it is a work around , not a solution. I stand corrected.

just having fun here! The problem of brakes locking is annoying. I hate it.

One day a “solution” will be found! Until them I will need to “ work around “ this. Lol

R4T sell the SOS Performance, Rear Disc brakes conversion kit. 2005-2021, + ( parking brake?)
Depends if you have a electronic brake booster , if not + $275.00
Colors of rotor. Silver $0, black $125, red $150. Drill $40, or slotted $40, or both, $50

Bottom line starts $1,263- $1,738 . Estimated labor time install is approximately 8 hours.
Expensive “solution “ if this prevents rear brakes from locking up.
    Not including shipping.

It's the way this "new" (after 2005) setup is designed. Earlier designs simply had the parking brake lever bearing on the adjuster assembly...these have a different mechanism that goes sort of over-center when the shoes get worn a bit. I had them lock up on the boat launch ramp with the rear wheels mostly underwater...that was fun. My old driveway was a slope and I remember the truck would never roll until I let the clutch out in reverse.

Best was I've found to deal with it is just replace the shoes when it starts to happen. Also, use OEM shoes. The aftermarket shoes tend to be a bit thinner than the OEM so they won't live as long until the parking brake starts to stick.

When I had the problems of locking up the rear brakes , my truck was under 10,000 miles. It was not the brake pads.
Once I had both E- brake cables replaced, 95% of the problems went away. I still have the original brake pads and I am just under 12,000 miles today. Oct 11, 2022.

Replacing your brake pads may have work for your situation. Glad you share this possible solution.

2024 Tacoma will have Rear disc brakes! Hope it will be better then the drum brakes.

I had this same problem with my 2019 SR5– one of the rear wheels was locked up the morning after washing the truck.
Tow truck driver started it up, pumped the Ebrake handle up and down a few times, making sure to really pull it all the way up as far as it could possibly go, and that fixed the problem.

The rear drum brakes locking the next morning happens more often then we know of. This happens to all kinds of vehicles with drum brakes. Google this!
I suggest after washing your Tacoma or any vehicle, take it for a drive to heat up the drum brakes and get them to dry-up.

Toyota mechanic also was able to partial lube the e-brakes, but I think the moisture went to far up the cables.
If this happens more often you may need to replace both E- cables as the next step.

Drum brakes is old school. My 2001 Camry has 4-disc brakes (no drum brakes). Why is the Tacoma finally getting 2024 getting rear disc brakes? Simple they are saving money , and didn’t want to make a better truck.

Did you see the article about the F-150 Ford trucks being sue for multiple millions because they save $21.00 per truck using a cheaper metal on the roof pillars. People dying in rollovers and getting smash and killed!
DO NOT BUY A FORD TRUCK…unless adding roll bars.

    Too few to list.
This happens to my truck as well. First time it happened, I knew it was the parking brakes. It usually happens when the truck has been parked for days or after being washed and not driven and just parked. I’ve had other vehicles with drum brakes and never had this issue.

Thank you for sharing your story. I live on a coffee farm. When it rains certain parts of the dirt roads get flooded. I believe after driving though theses roads dirt/ mud leak into the E-cables.
After replacing both E-brakes cables , the problem almost stop. Still it gets lock up once and a while after heavy rains. I fill up most of the deeper water holes.

If you drive thru mud and water DO NOT TRUST the axle air vent on the rear end. Best to get an extension. My 2019 Tacoma axle vent leaked. Damages was over $3,000 for replacement.
I install the one from ARB , has a filter and was installed in the rear taillight housing.

I see a lot of variable posts in here...and after experiencing this issue myself...My research has indicated this is caused by a failure of the aluminum anchor of the parking brake cable to the rear wheel. Here circled in red
    upload_2022-11-8_0-20-59.jpg
    upload_2022-11-8_0-21-15.jpg

you can see the crack that results in the cable "free floating" when it's pulled. The only true remedy is replacing the cable for a minimum $160 in parts for the right and left cable...followed by a many hours install. There are some great 2nd Gen videos. This break in the poorly chosen aluminum anchor is probably where water gets in and freezes the brake. I would suppose working this spot by hand after releasing the brake would release the wheel...But that would be suicide without chocking the wheels...and then I guess you need a long rope to remove the chocks?

Thank you for your post. I did replace both E- brake cables. It solve 99% of the problem. My rear brakes still locks up once and a while. Especially when using the hand brakes while parking. (Sometimes it will not release)

The first few times to the Toyota dealer the mechanic did lube the E-brake cables, it help a little bit. Once replaced, so much better.

Looks like you may have found the REAL problem. I will pass it on to the Toyota guys who I got to know very well.

The 2024 Toyota Tacomas will be coming out with DISC brakes, and should not have these same problems, I hope?

The dealer did give me at cost the e- brake cables and reduced the labor cost. Still I was out of $$$. Which should NOT happen at all. Toyota is going backwards sometimes, cutting cost here and there. Disc brakes should have been use in the third gens.
My 2001 Camry has 4-disc brakes. The Tacomas still has drum brakes …WHY? Toyota going cheap!

Did you know the Toyota guys told me NOT to use my hand brakes. “ Stupid” idea. I wish I recorded there recommendation.

I really like my Tacoma , but the flaws ? Um?

I live on a Coffee farm. On a hill side, need to be in 4-wheel drive every day. We have level parking most of the time. Dirt road and a few places with pave sections.
