Billet Aluminum Thermostat Housing for 4.0L 1GR-FE

I'm looking at getting the motorad 170. For mine.

 

I don’t think the high flow is ment for better cooling. Just more flow. I’d go with the high flow. I’ll be curious during the heat of summer.

 

I went with the 160 for mine. Need to install still but that's what I've been running for years now. Very hot here in the Arizona desert.

 

What temperature your thermostat opens at doesn’t mean your engine is going to run any cooler. It’s going to get up to exactly the same temperature anyway it will just take another 73 seconds.

 

Right, but like you said it takes longer to get to temp. Opening earlier to help combat hot/climbing temps. It's already 120 out.. why not let it open up sooner. Especially being boosted.

 

Because it makes no difference. Your engine is still going to climb to running temperature extremely quickly especially with outside temperatures that high. Having your thermostat open a few degrees sooner is completely pointless. It helps nothing. You could remove it completely and your engine will still run at 190-200. The thermostat is only there to get your truck up to temp as efficiently as possible.

 

Not exactly "true." If the other aspects of your cooling system are upgraded, there can be lower operating temperature range, that could not be had without a lower opening temp t-stat. It never stops how hot the engine can get. It does allow it to operate at a lower "normal" temp though.

 

I ran the 160f thermostat for a while and couldn’t get my truck up to normal operating temps even during the summer. I don’t think this is entirely true ?

 

For those that are interested I have sourced 170° thermostats! I have not got a solid source yet so we do not have a ton of the 170° stats but the option is on the table!

We now have 160° standard flow, 170° standard flow, 180° standard flow, 180° high flow, 195° standard flow!

 

Im going to bump this again, unless you have a custom tune ... you will want to stick with stock temp tstat.

I can look up the actual temp in HP tuners (its been awhile since i have messed with my tune). But I dont think it actually runs the O2 sensor checks wile running under load until the coolant temp is 183... if you dont get to that for a consistent enough time, those checks wont run and you will throw a code.

 

Got a part# for the 170°?

 

100% I agree with you on being tuned to run the cooler thermostat… I am getting conflicting info from a couple different tuners regarding if the check engine light will actually come on…

I have a couple saying it will stay in open loop and waste more fuel attempting to warm itself up and it may or may not throw codes.

Another tuner is saying he has never seen a check engine light on for cooling system not reaching temp or thermostat insufficiency. And he typically has the customer install the cooler thermostat the week prior to tuning…

 

FWIW, I've never had an issue or thrown a code regarding it getting up to Temp with the 160 and HP Tuners tune.

 

Likely because your tune has factored in the lower temp tstat, and 2, you live in a warmer climate to where temps are above the threshold often enough.

yes.. usually right around 190 +/- 10 degrees depending..

 

that’s probably why you’ve never thrown a CEL for temps or had issues.

I ran the 160F for a while, in the summer months it was great no issues but fall/winter the engine temps couldn’t get above ~168. This would throw a CEL after a while and the truck would get stuck in high idle.

 

That's why I think the environment and ambient temps play a larger factor for me and my truck. BUT.. we do go cold weather camping.. and it still has never had an issue with getting up to temp... so that's probably the Tune coming into play as well.
