So within the last week I adjusted my tv (kick down) cable on the throttle assembly. It immediately started shifting like it was brand new. However, today the transmission started making a weird noise, similar to a small propeller or fishing reel.

I’m gonna try adjusting it back to see if the noise persists but either way I’m kinda panicked.

    Any ideas on what’s happening?

    Update:

I adjusted the throttle valve cable back to how it was and the noise seems to have gone away. However, it appears the cable was stretched out or something because I’m unable to adjust the linkage to get the rubber stopper into spec without it causing issues.

I’ll probably have to replace the cable and see if that fixes it. Luckily I’m already in the process of draining/refilling the atf so I needed to take the pan off anyways.

Yeah I've had problems with that cable sticking in the past.....when I pulled it out a little too far.

I'd have to wiggle it a few times to get it to slide back down.....couple of Oh shit moments.....
Dont know if the sticking is in the cable.....or the lower part that goes into trans....
I'm super careful messing with that cable...now.....

I bought the replacement cable from japan....none in US for mine (2RZ)....
But have not even investigated how to install it....

I will be curious as to what you find.......thanks.....the pics are gold.....

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
You made it to tight !!

then pulled the plastic off the threads !

Maybe some Super glue might fix things just don`t glue the cable to the outer covering.

I appreciate you responding with your experience, it helps a ton. I started digging into how to replace it and it seems doable. But I’m still confused on how it got “stretched” or whatever.

So far I’ve had good luck with the Haynes Repair Manual on this truck, but I’d still like to track down what the FSM has on this topic. Here’s what Haynes has on it…

But I swear it wasn’t my fault haha

It had been shifting a little aggressively so I was trying to get the rubber sheath into spec (as shown in pic below).

I didn’t realize I was pushing the rubber piece off with the bolts in order to get it far enough.

Ok, maybe it was my fault…

This is for the 5VZFE - You're obviously not moving the stopper but it gives you an idea on how it should be sitting in the bracket. I'm not sure if that rubber piece is supposed to come loose as it did in your picture.

If you can't resolve yours, you can order a replacement cable. You'll need to drop the transmission oil pan to replace the cable. The FSM says the valve body needs to be removed but it doesn't.

Thank you for taking time to get all that!

That’s weird, the Haynes manuals says to remove valve body too but I definitely won’t be sad if I don’t have to.

It also doesn’t say jack about installing the new stopper so thank goodness you posted that.

Since I’m gonna replace the cable, would I reuse the old stopper or how’s that work?

The new cable comes with a new stopper, it cannot be reused.

    @Bubba’sTaco

    Here you go...
    Precheck starts on p7.

Also reference this vid which shows replacing the throttle cable with the pan off. It's that simple. Feed it through the hole, secure it and then tighten the bolt which holds it in place. Clean up the old FIPG and then seal it back up. Make sure you use the correct FIPG - toyota seal packer #1281 (orange).

TIP: When draining the pan, use one of those big containers which show amount of liquid. It will help to give you an idea what needs to go back in. I use this one -

The video is obviously not in english (speaking a mix of Punjabi/Hindi) but its the visual you need to see. I have it bookmarked at the relevant section.

Just hoping you can get it done. I just did this and I didn't stake the stopper at install. Should be fine doing it after the fact though. Good luck.

Thank you! It’s nice being able to see the connection at the tranny with good lighting.

That dude in the video deserves an award for being so frugal :D

Is this a no-brainer job to replace the throttle kickdown cable, nothing I have to worry about adjusting right at the transmission end? The throttle body end I know needs adjusted right. I plan to have my transmission pan off soon to reseal the pan better. This cable feels a little sticky when I pull it. Transmission feels ok, but I wonder.

Problem is the cable is discontinued, no aftermarket part. 3552035211

Is it the O ring on the transmission end that gets sticky? I can still get that. It appears the cable assembly is otherwise one part.
