Thats the key lock solenoid (keeps you from turning the key off when the transmission isn't in park), OP is dealing with the shift lock solenoid on the shifter.

Oh, well. Then that won’t work.

Looks like it’s coming apart one way or another. I can’t tell OP what to do, but I know a guy that would pull it apart and see if I could “delete” the lock. And then don’t touch the shifter while the truck is moving.

When I learned to drive a shift lock didn't exist.

When it is working it only prevents you from shifting out of park until your foot is on the brake. After it is out of park it's free to move into any gear / position.

If my shift lock solenoid breaks it is going in the trash. :D

When I learned to drive, the shift lock was located on the left side of brake pedal. ;)

here’s the shift lock ecu, if you look at the board by the connector there’s a solder line that’s disconnected. Don’t know if that’s what’s causing the issue but prolly not good. This ecu is $400, may try to solder this and try again.

I also learned on a manual as my Grandpa always said. Automatics were built for women and one legged men. :D

Yea looks like it got something spilled on it, looks like a circuit trace has corroded away. You can try soldering a small jumper wire in place of it, can't hurt anything if the module is junk anyway.
You may be able to get the whole shifter assembly with the module from a salvage yard much cheaper than a new module.

A little something every chance we get.
    Sounds simple, but.
The controlling fuse is RIGHT NEXT TO A BLANK! Make sure you didn't accidentally move it.

    *FIXED*

I soldered a new wire onto the board to fix the connection and it worked! Really appreciate all the info provided, it guided me to the fix. Also saved some $$.

Nice job, don't forget to repair those wires where you cut the insualtion off.
I would reccomend in the future use a needle or dedicated backprobe for testing instead of breaking the insulation.

Dm93 - thanks, i tried working with the needle leads and in that tight of a space was driving me nuts lol. Taped each wire up so they don't short. Also cleaned that board real good before re installing.

Thanks again for all the info everyone!

First time poster here. I am having this exact issue with my 04 Tacoma! Brake lights work, won’t shift out of park unless I press the shift lock release and will shut off not in park. I spoke with a Toyota parts rep and he recommended ordering a new shifter solenoid.I’m a little overwhelmed with some of this info but was that wrong? Will it more likely be the ECU?

I would remove the solenoid from the console and test it by leaving it connected electrically and see if the plunger moves when it should.
If it doesn't check for voltage at the solenoid coil terminals. If there is voltage and no movement replace the solenoid.

I use to think the same way, but once you've drive manual long enough in stop and go traffic in Los Angeles, the automatic is a game changer. I own my manual car for the weekends and my daily is the automatic!

I too with advancing age have chosen an Automatic for ease. They have come a long way since I was a pup.
