Dude for real. But looking at the pics you can tell its not intercooled. Some intern copy and pasted the 2nd gen (as in tacome model) tacoma stuff or something I guess.

Gen1 (as in Magnuson model) being modular lend itself to being modded for intercooling-

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ioned-and-modified-for-an-intercooler.394511/

I'm still looking for the thread where a guy squeezed in a trans cooler in the housing + pump, tank, external cooler etc to make an air/water setup.

I'm assuming most of the complaints probably come from guys with autos too, as those would typical ride in the ping prone rpm/load range. I've read before that there were ecu, maf, and injector changes around '00-'01 time frame, which could be contributing factors. I do feel like I notice more complaints from the '01+ crowd over the years, but could just be coincidence.

That tracks with what I've experienced. Mine was very pingy for awhile, but I learned to adjust my driving (5 speed) and keep my shifts higher in the RPM range to avoid boosting under 2500 rpm. Under 2500 it will ping. Over that, rarely if ever pings

    Gents,... CARB question...

When installing a first gen SC (Grey) in Cali, is a CARB sticker needed if it is a stock OEM Toyota unit?

If the CARB sticker is needed, can the sticker be purchased somewhere?

Yes it most definitely is needed, they will check. I have the TRD unit and they always look. I am not sure where to get one, I know people have mocked them up before based on a pic of the real ones and had them made by a sticker company because they couldn't find one. Maybe reach out to Toyota corporate

Magnuson would have them too of course, but I suspect they won't issue them without it being tied to one of their purchased products. Can't hurt to ask though

thanks! I found a couple on Ebay, would those be fine or does it need some special stamp on it?

Just needs to have the official carb cert number on it, they'll check it in their system to make sure it matches the product.

my 98 pings like a mofo on 93. ruthenium plugs helped a little. the TRD spec'd plugs did nothing. probably will end up haltech on that truck so i can keep it running happy and not dump a ton of money into it for a 7th injector and shit.

I bet if you do the check list below you have a great chance of no ping.
    1) 340 aem fuel pump
    2) service injectors because each has a filter
    3) 2 step cooler plugs
    4) new fuel filter
    5) vortech FMU 3:1 rise,
Fmu will get the stock fpr from 40 to 60 plus psi,

    6) and methanol last resort

Don't you have a 7th URD kit though? I've found I can tune out the ping but I pull so much timing and add so much fuel there is no power- I'd bet a lot of money I've essentially detuned it to nearly N/A power in that region. For me water/meth (thus I bought a nice kit, still need to put it in to replace the old one I removed) and E85 was the magic needed to not only get rid of ping but without a compromise to power.

    I hate you.

They check for mine every time, and not half-assed meaning if I twin charge later I need to crinkle coat everything, make OEM air box looking filter cover etc and maybe still won't trick them.

I would have gone on about how the above only applies if OEM wasn't keeping up and actually running leaner than targets but with your experience I have to wonder if its not just air fuels but other things, be it better fuel atomization or placebo.

I know colder plugs, better atomized fuel etc can reduce ping, but we are talking like using a garden hose on a full on house fire- sure it "helps", but its so friggen marginal. Now if you are actually running leaner than 14.7:1 in low RPM/closed loop boost then maybe you have flow issues and the above will help, but the above will not make the truck run richer than 14.7:1 in closed loop boost. But you already have been though this and know this, so I'm curious about your experiences with these mods outside of supporting mods like piggybacks.

My buddy’s a haltech dealer. So I may utilize his discounts. But when I replace the frame I’ll be tossing a aem 340 in that I have, and I’ll be messing with other little things. This truck fell into my lap. The 01 is still the one I plan on big power.

I do have the 7th, still on the stock/out of the box tune...which did nothing to solve my pinging issues after it was installed. But I think the stock tune makes it so that it doesn't start adding fuel until you're on it pretty good. Or maybe since I've started shifting higher in the RPM range its actually doing something now, not sure

Get in there and tune!! On paper I think the URD 7th is a solid kit. That kit for sure can tune out all spark knock and any higher load lean outs if the OEM fuel system is limited. From my experience additional fuel (fuel pump, infector) wasn't necessary but I also don't get into redline much as an auto. The huge issue is the low RPM lean closed loop boost, that is purely the OEM ECU tuning for stoich.

I think most of the URD kits out there have a fixed closed loop boost O2 skewing setting that gets you into the 13:1 range, and you retard timing until the spark knock is gone. The rocket science is watching closed loop fuel trims to zero out as best as possible and then also tuning for the closed loop to open loop transition and then all of the open loop cells.

Then it's next level Chads getting standalones to unlock more power. I'm still blown away with their before/after. Honestly OEM should be able to get the same power, I wonder if it's simply the OEM ECU screwing with timing. With my split second portion of my piggy I can make closed loop air fuel whatever I want, and then tune timing to be on the cusp, so I wonder what the trick is. Maybe it's simply how complicated tuning a 3D environment on the back of an NA mass air flow based OEM ECU and there is just too many variables to be consistent in regards to making optimum power.

I remember looking at a friend's AEM FIC tune after he came back from a Churches tuning session (long beach) and Shaun Church had changed the FIC from MAP/rpm to MAF/RPM for the timing map (or hell maybe it was MAF/TPS). I wonder if that makes for a more accurate load based timing curve, because I've retarded timing at boost/rpm points cause it pings there at some loads (speed and TPS is different but MAP/boost and RPM IS the same) but doesn't ping other times.

Makes me think tuning out all knock at X boost and Y rpm costs power at other times as what gear, up hill etc affects what actual volume the engine is ingesting (TPS value for same RPM and boost). Us piggies are basically tuning at 2D over the 3D NA OEM map and I'm betting Churches tuning has the big brain to figure out the most optimal approach for that method.

I donno, lots of variables but happy to see the standalone guys are happy, and happy to see there is more power to be had at the same boost levels.

Hey all, I’m getting ready to install my supercharger. I ordered a new one, which came incredibly quickly. Before I install, I currently have planned:

    - New plugs (IK22), new OEM wires
    - compression test on all cylinders
    - new fuel filter
    - 170° thermostat and full coolant flush/refresh
    - Innovate PSB-1 to see my AFR numbers before S/C install and have it ready to go

While I have the topside accessible, I plan to install refurbed injectors to maximize flow. I’m going to wait on the fuel pump to see how it goes. But I’m prepared to do that or meth as needed.

My question for you all: while I have the intake all torn down and the topside accessible, what other things should I consider replacing because it will easier and it’s 20 years old?

All I can think of is valve cover gaskets, and that is a maybe. Mine started to leak maybe around 240k, but could have been sooner and I just didn't notice.
