What is the physical difference in the Suspensions of the 2016 Tacoma SR versus the Tacoma TRD Off Road?

    • Not referring to Locking differentials & electronic aids, but just all the Suspension components. (I'm aware that the OR has slightly wider/shorter size tires)
      ----------------------------
Our Tacoma would spend 50% of its life on dirt roads, not necessarily going out into the woods, but rough roads that are not paved & in some areas washed away

My next question is: What should I do for longevity of the truck’s suspension:

Just drive a SR 4x4 as-is in stock form until parts need to be replaced, or quickly switch out the suspension pieces to the Bilsteins on the OD?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Just FYI, I test drove an SR5 (I think same suspension as SR) and bought a TRDOR. When I drove the OR off the lot, I noted, expectedly, that it was much bouncier.

Bump. I definitely would appreciate a breakdown in the difference. I bought an SR5 due to cost restrictions and the thought that I could always rebuild the suspension later. However I'm curious if the sport has sway bars, higher loaded springs, etc. What makes a sport "sport tuned". I do understand that the OR is going to have a bouncier, dirt friendly ride. Any subject matter experts?

I own an SR, they use Hitachi (black)- very bouncy, harsh nose dive when braking, rolls corners easily, basically they suck.

I replaced mine with 5100s all 4 corners- made all the Hitachi symptoms wayyy less.

I don't know why some people are talking about the TRD OR having a more bouncy/softer ride. They come with 4600 series Bilsteins which are the same as 5100s.

i have an sr and went icon front and back and aal. the only difference about the suspension is the type of coils and shocks. i put the trd OR suspension on my sr and it was slightly better.

No, I have OME 887 coils - 2.5 inches over stock.

Did you notice any difference in ride height when you put the TRDOR suspension on your SR?

Since joining TW, I've always thought it would be neat to revive a thread that was over 6 years dormant... Just kidding, this is where Google led me!

I've seen many say that 255/85R16 will fit on a TRD OR with no lift and no rubbing. What are the chances that the same is true with an SR DCSB?

All tacomas have the same ride height with the exception of the trd pro. So if it fits a trd offroad, it will fit a sr

Sport are stiffer more road oriented
    SR5 standard
Off Road is going to be progressive suspension and generally is nicer. (yellow Billies)
Pro - Fox progressive suspension (old 2nd gen was upgraded bilstien )

Thanks. I have not been able to compare UCA dimensions between the two and didn't know if the tire would rub there. I guess it makes sense that the clearance from tire to UCA would be similar across the models.

They all use the same control arms too (except 2022+ trd pro)

Pretty much every tacoma has the same suspensions, the only things that are changed depending on trim is the struts. But they all share the same height.

i have had the opposite experience with my SR. firm ride, barely any roll/dive. i do have the 4wd utility package. not sure if they use stiffer springs since most are used as fleet vehicles. i like the suspension. can carry a ton of weight in the back without riding too low.

I bought an SR knowing I would be replacing struts and shocks quickly. Right, now I am stock with 265 70 16s with plus 5 wheels. I have to say it rides nice on winding mountain roads and highway. I cannot wait to get an upgraded suspension with 285s. Then add a little armor and it should be very capable on or off road.

i was planning on doing the same but the suspension is too perfect for me to change right now. works great loaded and unloaded and i don't want to mess it up while spending money.

however, my 2020 SR was totally different. the leaf springs felt way too soft. i think they must have changed them from 2020-2021. or maybe it was because my 2020 was 2wd and my 2021 is 4wd. heavier leafs?

The only difference in the suspension of the SR and OR is the shock absorber model. The control arms, ball joints, springs, etc. are the same across all the trims with some exceptions.

I’ve owned a 2016 SR5 and a 2020 OR and my subjective option is that they drove identically. In a blind taste test, I’m skeptical anyone could tell the difference during normal driving.
