Put that shockwave away and get a shoulder stock shotgun so your eyes will be in line with any threat. you do not want to shoot any thing unintentional also drug addicts don't care what the sound of a racking slide sound like.

It’s either one of these two for me, both are 556 and although I prefer the way the 13.7 shoots I grab the 11.5 because of the light.

I think most are missing an important point here. It’s not so much the gun you use (although the type and caliber is very important) but the important thing here is training and practice. If you go out and buy a gun and put a hundred rounds through it and think you are ready to rock and roll, you are very very mistaken. In some cases you may be more dangerous to other people in the vicinity than the bad guy is. If you want to protect your home and loved ones you absolutely need to train for the situation by taking a home defense course, or a self protection defense course, handgun defense course etc etc. Training is the key and more training the better. Almost every time professional law enforcement uses deadly force , what and how they do it is based 100% on training, it becomes almost instinctive. Secondly you need to practice practice practice. Before ammo got so expensive I use fire 500+ rounds a month. In addition I trained from different positions, standing, kneeling, laying, one handed, two handed, different target distances, different lighting conditions , different targets and so on. Did that for years.
Finally the type and caliber of gun is very important. For example for home defense the AR15 style rifle has become quite popular. But depending on caliber and where you are it may not be so great. If you are in a city an AR15 in 223 may go through your walls, your neighbors walls and your neighbors neighbors walls hitting an innocent. A 44 mag in almost all circumstances is a poor home defense weapon for so many reasons. A shotgun depending on gauge and shot size may be a great home defense weapon or a poor defense weapon. Many factors, many variables.
Lastly I suggest all learn about and learn how to instinct shoot or point shoot. Because that is most likely what you’ll be doing in a self defense shoot out situation.
In my “past life” I had a tremendous amount of training. I know in almost any situation what I’m going to do without thinking about or worrying about it.
Bottom line training and practice, training and practice………….

Not any more or less than other calibers, the low mass of the projectile means it looses velocity a lot faster from hitting things then most other calibers. Also using hollow point ammo mitigates this, but any bullet capable of stopping an intruder will go through multiple walls and still have lethal energy.

I have a stocked 590 as well, which I've owned much longer than the shockwave. The bird head grip is a bit more agile though, and there's nobody else in the house so any collateral damage will be inanimate anyway. Also, I have the shockwave set up with 1 3/4" shells, so it's got 11 in the tube vs 7-8 2 3/4" shells in the 590 with an extension that sticks out maybe 1/2" past the muzzle. I do keep a non-lethal round first in the stocked 590 when it's got anything in the tube around the house.

Inside 15 feet, I trust the laser to keep me on target (and to keep the target aware of that since the green beams tend to be visible in a dark room). The three "mini shell" loads I have are a 7/8 oz slug, a combo shot load with three 00 pellets and 7 of #4, then there's the Federal loads with 20 pellets of #4 buck, all firing at about 1000-1100 ft/sec. If I ever have to pull the trigger, any of those should give anyone a good pause.

Best case scenario, I'll never actually need to reach for either of them or a pistol.

Sorry I gave a poor example, my bad. Basically type and caliber of cartridges is a factor that should be considered in different situations. Many people give that little or no thought.

Think the greatest overpen is big pistol cartridges and than 30 cal rifle rounds. Also people don't get body armor, ar500 plates stop alot of threats and can be gotten pretty cheap.

By "other calibers" are you talking rifle rounds or handgun rounds?

A 9mm or 40SW hollow point is far less likely to punch through multiple walls than a 223 round even with the higher mass. KE = 1/2 * M * V^2, so a 55gr bullet at 2700 fps has a lot more total energy than a 124gr at 1100 fps (the 223 rd has more than 2.5x the KE as a 9mm parabellum). The even tumbling, the 223's extra energy will carry it through more material than a mushroomed 9mm moving at a fraction of the speed.

For a really interesting combo, check out Liberty Civil Defense handgun loads. 50gr frangible hollow points (solid copper where they're solid) that'll get to 2000 fps from a pistol (not sure what minimum barrel length to reach that speed is). They're fast enough to penetrate a class 3 plate, but lose momentum so quickly they might not make it through 2 layers of drywall

pistol hollow points don't really expand when striking walls, 556 HP does however, 556 tends to tumble, which drastically reduces aerodynamic efficiency, its not as simple as this energy is more or less than this energy.

Maybe jacketed HP wouldn't expand, but a lightweight frangible round would come apart well enough (and consume a chunk of energy doing so).

The loss of aerodynamics isn't going to be a major factor in the 3.5" (maybe even less if it's a partition wall framed with 2x3 instead of 2x4) of distance between the sheets of drywall on an interior wall, but it could come into play in the open space of the room on the other side. smaller variations in kinetic energy might not become significant, but when it gets to be multiples that does start to matter more.

fwiw, I'd expect a 454Casull or 460/500 Mag round to over-penetrate far worse than a 556, but then the 454 round has about double the KE of a 223 rem cartridge and the bigger magnums are 20% or more higher than the 454. That's why I'm not reaching for my BFR if something bumps in the night; that beast might actually be able to endanger my neighbors with no common walls and stucco on both houses exteriors.

Take a look at these, that only one that stopped was a frangible 5.56. Pistol caliber JHP went through 4 walls, even if they did mushroom they busted through 4 wall no problem. The softpoint 5.56 was the only one to noticeably mushroom, an it broke into 2 pieces one of which stopped in the 4th wall.

And one M-193 stopped in wall 3.

I have several lone wolf glock bbls. Main reasons I bought them was for suppressor threads and tighter chambers. I load my 40 and 10mm hot. In factory glock bbls, brass in these calibers is toast after one firing, or they get bad smileys. Lone wolf barrels keep the brass in better condition. I also shoot lead through the lone wolfs, which isn't recommended in factory glock bbls. I somehow got one strange "clearance" lone wolf 9mm bbl that has a chamber so short that I have to load a few thou shorter for it. I have some "match" KKM glock barrels, i really can't tell the difference between them and lone wolf from an accuracy standpoint.
