Decked system 2nd Gen/3rd Gen crossover?

Looking to buy a used Decked system for my 2019. Hearing mixed answers. Some people say that one that fits a 2005-2018 will fit all but Decked claims that 2019-current is different. Can anyone weigh in with real life experience on what the differences would be?

 

Decked is the kind of company that would tell you that it won’t fit just to get more money from you…

I agree with you and I can't imagine that the differences are that much (or enough for it to matter to me). Hoping to find someone that has done it.

 

It'll fit. I've put the one from my 2019 in a 2010, with no issues. You may have a little bit more clearance here and there, or have a spot that is tight, but it'll go.

FWIW, I was the head of product development for them for a while. There are small changes that can interfere as the MY changes, so we'd update the cut files and parts appropriately to get a 'best' fit for each truck. Some trucks it just flat out won't work, while others it isn't a problem. They won't tell you what crosses to what because there are too many SKUs for them to keep track of and too many people to train on that info if they had it.

 

Right... a simple spread sheet is too hard to update when a new cut is made and then allow access to the people need it.

I do not have but one good thing to say about Decked as a company. I have installed quite a few of their systems in multiple makes, models, and bed lengths. It is comical about their claim that the drawers do not go all the way out because of "physics" while engineering has obviously worked around that for multiple other companies. Rather easily too.

Their systems are heavy, have a lot of wasted space, and are cheap in a lot of areas as well.

They ARE making as much here in the states as possible, or claim to anyway, so that is a good thing at least.

 

hmm, only one experience, but mine has been good, and when I emailed them looking for the small SS fasteners that I knew would be hard to find locally, they sent them to me free of charge via UPS and I had them 2 days later.

 

All the 2nd and 3rd gens are the same for decked.

 

Mounting locations/brackets are different.

I have a lame question. Any chance a decked system from a 15'-current Ford F150 5' 6" bed can fit my 6' bed Taco, if I modify it? I have a chance to get one for free, practically. I am getting ready to bust out the dremel and hack saw! LOL

The answer is ‘sort of’. You cut through the ammo cans and it’ll fit. Takes more than a little modification, but the drawers will go between the wheel wells and you can make it happen. If it’s free, go for it.

 

I was thinking the same thing, but just what do you suggest; cuts on both right and left sides vertically on all 4 the ammo cans? I was thinking, might I have to trim the edges on each side.
yeah its pretty much free, just need to pay for cost of gas to get it from Arnold, CA to the bay area.

 

Yes, you’ll have to cut the decks too. It’s a pretty drastic change, although the double wide drawers are good. The main issue is retention in the bed at the cab end. If you have d rings added to your bed bolts you can rig up an attachment to those. If you don’t do something it’ll bang up and down when you are on a rough road.

You can use a skilsaw to cut the cans and the deck. Using a blade that is intended to cut a little metal will go right through the steel tubes on the deck. (There are blades meant to do both, or just a framing blade.).

One more note, because you aren’t cutting to the profile of the bed, you’ll likely have more gap at the edges. Stuff can fall down in there and get under the drawers. I’ve seen guys take a rubber mat and cover to the edge to prevent this. You don’t want it to fit tight either—the system grows and shrinks with temp, and it will crack if too tight.

 

The more I look at the Tacoma version, I am thinking I can get away with one horizontal cut at the top ( where it meets the cab), across the upper ammo cans; and then trim down one of the sides (passengers side, looks optimal) to fit.

Retention is where it will get tricky. I do have the D-rings on the bed bolts. I definitely want it secure and not banging around. What do you suggest is the most secure way to retain this puppy?

I am right there with you about filling in the gaps. I was thinking of using remnants of whatever left over pieces from trims/cuts, or maybe some flooring VCT tiles (cut to size) I have that my brother left in our garage- glue them together with ABS expoxy on fiberglass. but then again a rubber mat seems like an easier and quicker fix.

Get a couple turnbuckles and quick links, drill a hole in the end of the c channels and you should be able to pull it down.

Rubber mat works well. Anti-slip, covers the edges, won’t crack the decks. “Horse trailer mat” is available where I am, a heavy duty rubber mat that you can cut to fit. If you have a farm/ag supply store near you, they probably have it.

 

Anyone put 3rd gen decked into 2nd gen

I heard all you need is to change a couple little cheap parts they sell separate to do that

 

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to include my experience here since I was looking for the same exact type of answer when I was doing my homework.

I bought a used decked system v1 from a guy who had it on his 2nd gen TRD tacoma short bed 5ft. I now have it on my 3rd gen tacoma SR5 short bed and it dropped right in, no issues or any modifications. If you look at the DECKED specs online for the 2nd and 3rd gen, they are exactly the same.

I saw from a FB thread a guy confirmed buying a used decked system from a jeep gladiator 2022 for his 3rd gen short bed. Surprisingly, the specs for the decked system between both platforms were the same given both are shorties.

All this to say that the decked system is essentially compatible between different vehicles given you review the product specs/measurements beforehand and test-fitting to confirm.
