Motorex Trail Gear Oil 75w?

Anyone tried Motorex in the transfer case?

Just use 75w90 and not worry about it. Toyota and Lexus both told me that’s what they use. Even have emails from corporate to prove it.

Here where we have freezing cold winters that gear oil doesn't work well. A buddy that owns a large auto repair shop working on many 4wd brand manufactures vehicles only recommends using the 75w toyota oil, or an equiv. like what shell has, or bmw. Say the other stuff like

75w-90 can get like sludge in cold weather not being able to shift in 4wd, or back till the truck warms up enough.

 

That was true for 2nd gen Tacoma. 3rd gen Tacoma has a thread full of people getting 4x4 shifting problems with 75W90.

And 3rd gen Tundra switched to ATF for the transfer case, like GM trucks, in case you were curious.

 

If i recall, i think one of my earlier toyota 4x4 pickups used atf in the transfer case.

 

^I put Red Line MT-LV in my transfer case last week. The oil is red. I now suspect Dexron III would work, but might cause leaks due to seal compatibility issues.

 

The Motorex looks tempting.

 

I wouldn't run that. That oil is designed to work with a clutch that endures a ton of slipping to modulate power. It says it has an extra additive to enhance clutch engagement. You don't want that in your Tcase.

Why not just buy one of the ones where the manufacturer recommends it for use in place of the OEM 75w? Redline MT-LV, Ravenol MTF-3, Etc.

 

Agree. Just buy something that is proven to work well.

 

I run this in my MTX tC2 that uses the vague 75W GL-4 Toyota spec low viscosity fluid (that is $70/qt from Japan). Shifts fantastic. Only 4k miles on my Taco so haven't had to look into all the fluids yet, but if it calls for the same stuff I wouldn't hesistate to run it in this as well.

 

Anyone have links to deals on OEM 75W? I’m a shade tree mechanic and will be serving the truck for the first time myself.

 

Additives aside(couldn't find a VOA for Motorex)...
Just going off their TDS, the Motorex is a bit thinner(0.5 cSt) and has 1/2 the flash point of Toyota LF.

 

What about Fuchs Titan Sintofluid FE 75w?

Red Line actually updated its MT-LV datasheet to declare compatibility with Toyota LF after being queried by a TW member. Couple of 3rd gens in my off road club already ran it through winters with good results.

I posted them on 4R forum with screenshots of the emails from corporate.

I called at least 5 local Toyota dealerships and a few Lexus and all said they use 75w90. It’s cheaper and they get it in bulk. So that’s what went into my 4runner, gx460 and now tundra. No issues.

 

75w90 has a pour point -38*. I have a hard time believing it will sludge up. 75w is only used for better mpg according to Toyota.
