Like whiskey or in general? I drink typically for the taste. Price falls short on the list of importance when the taste is good or stuff you want to really try/enjoy. I drink craft beer for the taste and tried SO many beers before I kinda got sick of trying new stuff and now stick to a couple different styles I really enjoy. But I have no problem paying $15-20 for a 4 pack for some shit I know I really enjoy. Same goes for whiskey. I'm new to collecting and tasting and I feel similar to when I first got really into craft beer. Enjoying the bourbon for it's nuances and tastes vs just drink to get hammered. But I am sure if you ask a 30+ the same question vs a 21 year old you'll get drastically different answers.

This is an interesting question…surely there are the alcoholics out there but I think anyone drinking whiskey just to get hammered on the daily will just go buy the cheapest bottom shelf crap and go for it. All the regulars here have lots of interest in taste and difficulty of acquisition, or else there really isn’t much to post about. And of course who doesn’t like the nice relaxed warm feeling after a pour.

Speaking for myself, there’s a mysterious collecting aspect to all of this as well, though I’m not buying a damn thing just to be on display, or even as an investment. My friends and family and I will drink it all one day, I look forward to the unique experience that comes with trying each bottle, the fun of sharing them, and the excitement of getting my hands on something that’s hard to find.

I'm excited to get to the point where I feel I have enough where I would be down to share with anyone. I feel like my collection is still so small that my brain is like

Haha yes BUT anything really good is more better when you’re sharing it with another bourbon lover. I have friends that know when they come over I’m gonna pour them something exciting. Usually a few somethings so they can try some new things. There are few good experiences that aren’t better with someone else along for the ride.

I think it took me a little while to start sharing more.
If someone comes over who enjoys and appreciates whiskey - if I've got a bottle open, they're free to enjoy it.
If someone is just like meh, whiskey - I'll often pour them some similar bottles and let them compare(Blantons vs John J Bowman, Michters Bourbon vs Michters American), easy to drink bottles (Heaven Hill BiB, Weller SR), or bottles with unique flavor profiles (Barrel Seagrass, EC Toasted Barrel, Isaac Bowman Port Finished).
If they want mixed drink, they're getting what I get - Buffalo Trace for bourbon drinks and either Rittenhouse Rye or Sazerac Rye for rye drinks.

I feel like I've done enough trades and received enough samples from members of TW that if you want a sample of something I've got open, I'll send samples to you just as I think you'd exchange samples with me.

Staying in Manhattan for a week and went exploring last night. Found a sweet little bar called “The Whiskey Ward”. I was already very very far into having too much fun so I can’t remember how much this flight was but who cares. Pics of the shelves is only about half their offerings, the rest was whiskey.

Glad you posted this. I'm en route to Manhattan as I type and will have to add this place to my itinerary.

Damn, big time jealous on this one. I'm almost done collecting all of their 10 year and under offerings.
I've got toasted barrel bourbon, toasted barrel sour mash, barrel strength bourbon, and bombergers to go.

don’t be jealous. This is unattainable in the real world. Unless you’re willing to pay $3000++ .

The 10 year is no easy task either. I am in the industry and got an extremely lucky allocation here

I think it's more like $5-5.5k+ depending on year

OMG! Are you going to save it for a special occasion, leave on the shelf for prosperity, or what is the plan.

I have some bottles that are hard to get, and I’ve left them sitting for years. I’m not sure it’s the best plan.
