I run the Mobile 1 Racing 4T synthetic, manual says I can go something stupid like 9K miles, but I’m changing it every 3K because the manufacturer recommendations are now revolving around making it last outside of warranty and reducing waste, not necessarily what’s best for the vehicle.

I’ve put 3300 miles on my bike in 5 months, the goal is to average 1K/month and I’m comfortable with quarterly oil changes, I also spend a few minutes of my commute each day slipping the clutch in traffic at 2 stop signs along my route and I don’t want the extra particulate floating in the case for more than 3K miles.

Had quite an adventure yesterday. Took an intermediate safety course required for my job. It is about 50 miles away on the other side of Houston which means that on a good day it takes an hour each way.

Yesterday was not a good day.

Getting there and taking the class went well. Right when it was time to wrap up and head home, the storms moved in. Temps dropped from the low 80s to the low 60s and it was raining. Pouring. Dumping. I'm riding in the direction of the storm on the second third of my ride, so I'm hoping to get in front of it and get home so that I don't have to ride in it the whole way. I was riding slowly and carefully, but it was working. I felt the rain start to get warmer and taper off a bit. After 25 or so miles of riding through the storm, I was almost out of it.

Then my TPMS alert went off. I cycle through the menus and see that my rear tire is down to 36 PSI from a normal 42 cold. OK that's not so bad, so I move to the right lane. I do NOT want to be stopped on the side of Beltway 8 so I took the next exit. Down to 32 PSI. OK let's find a gas station and assess the situation. Well apparently the part of town I stopped in is like a corporate plaza that goes on for miles. It's about 530 in the afternoon on a Friday so there's plenty of traffic. I end up in a Walgreen's parking lot at about 15 PSI because apparently these people need makeup and candy but not air in their tires. The culprit is immediately clear: There's a piece of metal in my tire right in the middle of the tread. I can put my finger on it and that appears to make it stop leaking.

At this point I'm still about 20 miles away from home. The storm is catching up to me again. Wife works nearby but she left work early so it'll be about 45 minutes until she can get to me with the compressor she keeps in her car. The plan is to air up and see how far we can get, rinse and repeat. I start asking strangers in front of Walgreens if they have a compressor. I get a lot of looks that seem to indicate that I may actually be a lunatic. Maybe I am, because nobody keeps a compressor in their car. So I wait. Wife gets there eventually and we air up. We implement the plan.

It's an almost immediate failure. I'm losing air faster than ever now and we're in a suburban planned community where, again, nobody needs fuel for their vehicles and air in their tires. After about 2-3 miles, I'm stopped at an urgent care and the storm has caught up in full force. I got ahead of the wife because she got caught by a red light, but while I'm waiting a guy comes out and tells me I can put the bike under the overhang at the front door where people get dropped off. I'm quite grateful and we get to talking. I tell him about the plan. He tells me if I wasn't wearing a helmet he'd smack me upside the head. Tells me it's a stupid plan and it'll get me killed. Says he's the boss of the place and I should leave my bike there. It's well lit, in a good part of town, cameras are everywhere, and the front desk can see the bike without even getting up. I take him up on the offer.

This morning I was wondering what the hell I was thinking. Leave my bike in a public place because a stranger said he'd look after it? My insurance company will never believe me.

So wife and I pick up a tire plug kit and we head back with my little battery powered compressor and a pair of needle nose pliers. Surprisingly, the bike is still there. I go inside to the front desk to let them know I'm there and the guy from last night comes out and I thank him. He says he brought his compressor and he'll meet me out front. This guy shows up with a 2.5 gallon tool compressor and an extension cord. That'll make quick work of things. I pull out the piece of metal. It looked like a small piece of a large, hollow needle. Leftover spike strip? It was very small but enough to ruin the ride. He helped me plug the tire and press it up and it holds. It was a pretty enjoyable ride from there to my local motorcycle garage where they quoted me an installed price for two new tires over $100 less than it would have been to have them shipped to me. I should get my bike back by Wednesday.

Anyhow like I said, not a good day. But made better by good people.

Glad that worked out for you. Sucks to deal with that stuff and have rain thrown in the mix on top of it. There are some decent small profile compressors available that are easily carried on the bike. I have a Moto pump mini with a Dynaplug tire plug kit under the seat of my bike at all times. Something for you to consider.

You guys all spoiled with TPMS sensors on your bike. Last time I had a nail in my tire I only noticed it when I was cruising on the highway and the backend started getting squirly. Pulled over at a gas station air up more and headed home.

I'll definitely go check it out if they still have it next Thursday. That would be the perfect camp bike.

Wow, those seem almost too good to be true. Like the cost of bikes finally came down to a normal level.

Yesterday evening my dad stopped by my shop and helped me install the top gun spring, so much better than the stock spring, went from preload level 5 to 2 and I may drop it to one.

The bike rides so much better not being 5/8ths of the way down the suspension travel, now I just need to dial in the rebound setting.
