Quick question for you folks running a cap or camper on your 2.7s….

Did it hurt your mpg’s much? Or due to “aerodynamics” not really.

I’m finding with @1” lift and 32” 255 skinnies on my 2015 manual trans 4x4 I have to work to get 18mpg. Guessing the heavy but good looking 17” steelies are killing me! I’m about to replace the tires with Duratracs but have been looking at camper shells recently.

    Thanks in advance!

You'll notice it some. I have 235's on stock steelies and when I remove the cap I can feel the truck have a little more pep. Mpg wise, there isn't much of a difference. Maybe 1/2 - 1 mpg gain. At least that is my experience.

Does anyone have a white base model 2nd gen with a color matched grille? I’ve been searching for awhile for a reference to see if it would actually look decent on the base model?

I can finally join the thread! Earlier today, I purchased this new '22 Tacoma Access Cab 4x4 with a 2.7L engine. I initially wanted the V6, but after finding this truck and taking it on an overnight test drive, I found the four banger will fit my needs fine. After seven years, I'm excited to be in a Tacoma again!

Congrats. Check back in on the high mileage thread when you hit 300k. Things are bullet proof.

Hi everybody, just got a 2012 2.7 4 cyl 5lug and am new to the 5 lug world. Looking to get these wheels on a stock lift. With the zero offset and the 4.5 backspacing, I have no idea if this will work or not.Finding that finding rims for this guy is the unicorn! Please help if can. Thanks!

I thought I would post mine. things that I am wanting to do for the future are 1. Wheels and tires, I have a couple wheels in mind but there is always one thing that the wheel doesnt check off on my list. Like I would prefer a 16 in rim but I am fine with 17inches, I found some ssw strykers but I dont know if the -24 offset is going to be to much, I dont want them to stick way to far out and dont really know how much they will stick out. 2nd thing I am looking at is intermediate windshield wipers. 3rd is tint, and the fourth thing I am looking at is some foglights

As others mentioned, acceleration seems to suffer a bit with a camper top, but overall fuel economy seems to be about the same. In regards to wheels and tires, running heavy tires will be even more detrimental than heavy steel rims as they are a longer "lever". I got rid of my LT245/75R16 BFG KO's on steel rims and replaced them with LT215/85R\16 Firestone Destination XT's mounted on some sr5 alloys. I dropped 18lbs per corner and the truck feels amazing. 12% better fuel economy and much better pick up. Are the XT's as bombproof as the KO's? No, but I'm not doing rock shale crawls all the time, and the XT's are pretty tough. Unless you are doing a lot of sand, tires wider than the 245's seem overly heavy and wide.

Wow that’s a skinny tire bro,
    Got any pictures?

235s by chance or are they indeed 215?

Guess I should add I’m probably going to ditch the FJ steelies I have and find a decent lightweight 17” wheels.

I love the 255/75-R17 Duratracs through, only 4-ply and I gained a whole 1.5 MPG back from the BFG KOs I had… lol…

215's. 235/85's have a 1" greater dia., which would make 1st gear even taller. They are light truck tires so the weight rating is more than the stock 245's, but tire weights are the same (36.5lbs). I think you can get 17" 235/80's that weigh 40 lbs, which is pretty reasonable. I have a set of 245/75R16's P rated tires on alloy rims that I use most of the time if the truck is in the city. I run the 215's in the winter (snowflake rated) or if I'm going on an offroad adventure. I'm getting pretty fast at swapping out wheels.

Is there anyone with a 16-17 2.7 with 5MT interested in making a video of themselves driving around and rowing through the gears.

Just got this a couple weeks ago, and I finally got my wheels and new tires put on today. I'm pretty thrilled with it. And I'm saving a whopping 28lbs in wheel weight from what was on it previously.

Can you tell us what was on there previously? That’s a lot of weight if it’s per corner!

It's total weight, so around 7lbs per corner. There were the Vision Warrior 17s on before with some Michelin hwy tires in 265/70r17.

I broke 1000 miles while on a day trip to Western North Carolina. I also took off the air dam. Looks much better without it and haven't noticed a big change in mileage or wind noise.

Get some bigger tires and wheels and it sets the truck off. You made a good call on the air dam and it doesn’t make a difference either way. The ORs don’t come with them so that tells you all you need to know. Great looking truck!

Bigger wheels and tires = slow, noisy, and inefficient.
