So I had a fun mishap today. I keep a 5 lb fire extinguisher in the bed of my truck, underneath my tonneau cover. It used to be ratchet strapped in next to the big black box that I always carry. Recently, I got a second smaller box, and so I decided to put the extinguisher in there. On the first trip out on some pretty rough terrain (I buried my hitch and messed up the plug) apparently the box bounced open, allowing the fire extinguisher to go off in the bed of my truck. I had a fun afternoon cleaning everything, including my air pump and tools that got coated. Just be careful, and not dumb like I am.

I use a QuickFist to hold my extinguisher. I've also got one wrap of electrical tape around the handle and through the ring of the pin. A single wrap isn't enough to make it difficult to pull the pin, but it helps keep the pin from rattling out. I don't envy your cleanup :p

That Walmart tote with yellow lid doesn't have any secure latches holding the lid closed. It isn't a "trail rated" storage case like the Plano.

Reminds me of that time I was reaching in a tote in the dark looking for a wrench... Is that it? Pull, push.... What is that noise??? OH Darn!

Yep. I figured that out, I'm gonna get an actual mount for the fire extinguisher.

Yeah, I'm looking at getting a quick fist mount. It only took me like 2 hours to clean everything:oops:

Quick fist with a single wrap of grip tape around the body of the extinguisher. Almost learned that one the hard way myself. Even though the quick fist is a perfect fit, hard for the rubber to grab on the smooth power coat

I've got mine mounted vertically to the side rail of my bed. The base rests on the plastic shelf over the wheels. My driving hasn't been spirited enough to lose it yet :)

Use a $25 mount from Amazon. Hose clamps to mount it to the fire extinguisher, and the bedrack. I also put some heatshrink over the clamps.

My only issue with this is the ease of access with the tonneau. It is probably too far forward to get without folding it up.

I've seen those, that may be the route that I go. Will it be easy to attach to the bedrails since I don't have a bed rack or anything? Thanks.

There’s a spot on the mount to put small bolts however it wouldn’t be practical in my opinion. Heres a link to is so you can see it.

Mine went off in my cab several years ago, while I was unloading after a trip. Luckily, it was in the big access cab door pocket, and most of the powder went into the door through the gaps. Had a lot of fun dissassembling my door and trim at the coin-op car wash to vacuum everything out.

What actually happened was this: in the milliseconds directly following the rear end hitting the ground, the tote lid flew askew, and in the same moment, your tools (including a magnesium concrete leveler) slammed against each other, producing a shower of sparks that the wind was quickly taking towards your fuel can, where, unbeknownst to you, there was a tiny vapor leak which, ignited by the sparks, would have lit the can off like a giant Molotov cocktail, shattering your rear window, and sending a skin-melting plume of flame inside, leading to your painful demise. This series of tragic events was short-circuited when the hand of the Tacoma god reached down and activated your fire extinguisher, saving your truck and your life.

And here you are ungratefully complaining about the clean up.

Guess I should be more respectful. Glad the Tacoma Gods are looking out for me.
