Oh I see. Thanks for the offer, maybe I’ll fire up the Facebook account later and look a little closer.

No worries; I probably did one of those 'mental responses' where I didn't type everything out cause I said it to myself.

Yeah a ton of shit comes up for sale out here, specifically in Fresno. Welders, plasma cutters, large power tools, etc.

I always see great deals on DeWalt and Milwaukee tools that I would love to buy but the last thing I want are stolen power tools.

    That's for sure.

I've yet to buy a used Milwaukee tool. Sure I buy them new but they have to be a great deal with another free tool or battery.

Are you familiar with the Milwaukee hack?

Some bundles are items that have individual SKU's.

Let's say you have a Milwaukee impact.

Then Home Depot puts out a sale for the Milwaukee Impact and Free Tool promo so you opt for the leaf blower (I have it, it's badass!).

If that impact is normally $250, the free tool is generally the same price or lower. So if the leaf blower is $250, buy the bundle, then return the impact for the partial refund. And you get yourself that leaf blower for way less than having bought it separately.

Just an example but sometimes the deals are even better than my example.

Earlier today, my truck wouldn't start. Dash lit up and I heard a humming noise when I turned the key, but the engine didn't crank at all. I let it sit for a few minutes and checked the voltage across the battery terminals--12.5v. Tried again, same symptoms at first, then it cranked and started immediately (noticeably faster than it usually starts, maybe because the fuel system was primed?). I just took it out for a drive again ~7 hours later and it started up like usual.

My first guess is that the starter is going bad, and it was sitting on a dead spot. Does that sound plausible? If not, what else might cause that?

It works with other brands, too--it's just how Home Depot's (and possibly other stores') return policy works. ToolGuyd wrote an explainer a few months ago: https://toolguyd.com/home-depot-cordless-power-tool-deal-hack-explained/

When my starter was going out, it just didn't engage at all when I turned the key.

Just a single 'click' and nothing.

I let this go on for about a week and the single click thing happened more often.

Replaced the plunger and contacts, and it worked like new again. Cheapest fix I've had to do on the 4Runner for sure.

Oh I'm sure, I just don't have other power tool brands.

I had some Craftsmen Nextec tools some 12 years ago but I ended up giving those away.

Some of my wife's family members have Makita and they're definitely solid tools based on the shit they put them through.

I like the way that works out. I wonder if I could get a Milwaukee flame thrower for my driveway.

I'v always been partial to DeWalt, back in the day when I was setting Lowes stores with Valspar we had a corporate deal with DeWalt so we got everything cheep or free. I am not opposed to Milwaukee, Makita was always hit and miss. My grinder is awesome. The drill I had sucked.
This made me cringe a few weeks ago when I saw the price.

No sweat. I took it as a heads up as to what kind of stuff is out there.

I have a deep seated aversion to asking for help, so I never got very far

I've had the chance to mess with DeWalt angle grinders, and even had one at my last job. Great, smooth running tools for sure.

But yeah at those prices...fuuuuuck that.

It's why I always go for the deals. That and it pairs with my military discount too cause, I'm frugal like that

I'm guessing you already have a good mid/high-torque impact, but if not... you'll forget about the money the first time you zip off a stubborn fastener without breaking a sweat.

Got no experience with Rigid, but I never heard anything bad about them either.

I've never owned a Ridgid tool, but what I know from the internet...

They're part of the TTI Tools group. Milwaukee is also a TTI brand. Some Ridgid tools are similar to Milwaukee designs, but usually are less powerful. Ridgid did put out an impact (part of their "Octane" line) that outperformed Milwaukee's Fuel in many reviews, but it was quickly discontinued/replaced, presumably due to TTI being unwilling to undercut their premium brand. That particular one, however, appears to be a more basic model--it has a brushed motor and everything high-end is brushless these days.

Torque Test Channel has some very thorough reviews of the tools out there. I don't think they've done that particular model, but they've done a few other Ridgids, and they keep a ranking of all the tools they've tested with scores for performance and value.

The Hercules (Harbor Freight) impacts performed impressively well in their tests: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrYGybCl630
