Can relate. Years on the tools then stepping up to a direct supervisory role in an office full time makes one soft.

I can relate, although I was beginning to develop those symptoms and more after decades of wearing steel toe work boots, standing on concrete floors and working in shops. I usually start the day with an Aleve and some coffee. Now I sit in a cube for 75% of the day and things still hurt. I think it's part of getting less-young every year.

Lumber probably wasn't as big of issue years ago. The quality of cut lumber has taken a big hit in recent years.

I think I see three solutions.
1) Replace those three joists with new ones. (expensive)
2) Use a filler piece on top of the joists to level the tops up. (PITA)
3) Gradually plain the other joists down to create a new level surface. (a lot of work)

I would choose option 2. The gap is thick enough to fill, but there is still enough joist left to provide sufficient strength. You'll always know it's there, but no one else will. At least not until someone else rebuilds that deck in 30+ years. Get one extra board and cut it in 5/16" stips, or whatever the appropriate thickness is needed, and lay those over the top of the joists. Use a little liquid nail if you like, but everything will be secure and level once the boards are screwed down.

 

You can, but it likely won't change the outcome. The real problem is between you, God, and your parents.

 

I'm doing better. Lower dose of chemo has been most helpful. Physical therapy helping too.
