Forget about the oil for a moment. Going back to post #15, OP said it had rod knock and was overheating. And the master mechanic KEPT DRIVING IT?
    WTF.

Honestly, I'm not sure the OP's truck even exists. Haven't seen any photos of it with the 33's or the SC, and that's usually some genuine thirst bait for TW. Also, the OP says he bought a '94 Hilux, and aside from one pic - no new posts on that either. I think we're all being trolled. Prove me wrong.

Exactly this. Oil clearances have not gotten “tighter” in modern engines. Engine oil technology has improved over the years and also gotten thinner, which equates to less hp being used to pump the oil when cold, which of course means less fuel used over the life of the vehicle. Not that it matters, but I am a 30 year career mechanic with experience in Toyota and Lexus dealerships to name a couple, at Lexus as shop foreman, diagnostic specialist, ASE master with L1 cert

    RTFM oh my god.

(End of sarcasm now). The manual actually says you can run 5W-30 for one change as long as you run 0-20 the next. They don't recommend it but they (Toyota) has accounted for it in testing.

    Me too.

People think this trok engine being beaten and abused is fragile enough to implode from oil being slightly wrong weight. I doubt it.

First part was sarcastic git. Because in the manual it actually says "yeah, uhh 5-30 is fine....", So I'd say 10-30 is fine too. Great? No. Reason for engine to go kablooie? Also no.
