I stopped at master tech. Glad he was not an engineer.

Naw, engineers are blamed for everything. Glad to see someone else get blamed for something.

He just blows up a low mileage engine then wants his son to pay for it...

    So. Many. Stickers.
Warranty work still has to get approved by Toyota. If they tear that engine down and find clogged oil passages, they're going to do an oil test. In fact, for engine replacement, all fluids get tested.

Whoever submits the warranty claim AKA the dealer is going to have to send and reports on literally everything to get it approved. Toyota does not mess around with warranty work.

False. Tighter clearances and oil passages, tighter clearances with cylinder sleeves, etc etc. They're designed for 0W-20.

    They will

So it was overheating and your so-called Master Tech Dad didn't bother to address that issue before running it hard enough to warp the head and blow the gaskets?

I'm half a day late to the party and I didn't read the 10 pages between here and page one. So maybe I miss something but... Sounds to me like your dad has lost his touch. No offense

Nope, you pretty much got it summed up. 98% of the pages are us trying to decipher what is fact, what is fiction, and what in the hell we are still doing here. Lol

Nope engine is designed for oils up to 15w-40, provided you stay in the correct temperature range.

Going to assume OP isn't running a race across the Sahara desert, thicker oil in normal conditions is not good for modern engines.

Try running a 2GR on 15W-40 under normal conditions and see how far you get. Lol

Here it is, 15w-40 is good till 10*f, hardly the sahara. Places in Texas are farther south than some places in Mexico. Does driving over the border change the tolerances?

This should be added to the 3.5L engine failure thread.

OP I feel you. It would be nice if all of us had smart, conscientious parents but some of us have neanderthals.

I have a feeling "Dad" is more of a "if it doesn't have an 8ft bed it's not a TRUCK" kinda guy.

Cool. I wasn't talking about the oil itself, was talking about the engines. With tighter oil passages and tighter clearances, plus the whole VVTI setup....

But hey at the end of the day, it's your truck. Run what you want. Maybe you'll get a million miles and I'll only get 500,000.

what tighter oil passages? that chart is for a 2gr-fks in a Tacoma sold in Mexico, it has the same oil passages as every other 2gr-fks.

Do I need to hold your hand? Do try and keep up with the thread, there's a lot of comparisons of various engines above. I had mentioned that newer engines, especially those with VVTI are built with tighter clearances, tighter tolerances, smaller oil passages, smaller gaps with the cylinder walls and sleeves etc etc. As compared to older engines.

You know what? It's the internet. Fuck it. Run 0w400 for all I give a shit. It should do just fine in Arizona. Let us know how it goes

Ok so why is it ok the run those oils in a Tacoma in Mexico WITH THE EXACT SAME ENGINE, but in the US the magic tolerances rule it out?
