I'm not entirely sure if this only happens on a cold start, but it's the only time I've noticed it. RPM's go over 1k, and I can hear the engine running briefly before shutting off. It isn't violent with how it shuts off, and sort of just turns off as if I turned the key to "Off".

If I go to start it again, I have never had a problem with it starting up and staying running.

    This is for a 2014 Tacoma V6 4x4 SR5 w/ Automatic Transmission.

The 2 most common things I've seen cause that is a battery that is getting weak or a fuel pump that isn't holding pressure when the engine is off.

I think a battery test and a fuel pressure check would be where I'd start.

My Buick Rendezvous did this all the time. It was the fuel pump.

I already have a fuel pressure tester, I just need a way to connect it. Does this thing have a fuel pump for each bank? Or is that second line the return? Also, is there any way to test it without selling my liver to pay for Toyotas SST to hook the darn gauge up?

I'm thinking of just getting a tee to Schrader valve adapter off Amazon, some decent hose clamps, and a Schrader valve cap so I can leave it in there while not in use. Then just cut my fuel line in half and stick the darn thing in there. Bad idea or better way? Also, anyone know the fuel line inside dimensions? Shouldn't really matter too much if not, they usually sell the tee's with steps on it for various size fuel lines.

And forgot to add to the original post, this problem is actually difficult to recreate. This morning I went out there and tried starting it as fast as possible and leaving close to zero hang time in the on position before starting, and it fired up just fine.

Grab this and connect it to where the fuel line goes from the frame to the engine.

I'd clean the throttle body before cutting into a fuel line

I would lean towards fuel pump too. Have a friend turn the key on/off for you while you put an ear on the tank. It sounds like it's not priming. Most pumps will run for 3ish seconds with the key on, then turn off until it gets an rpm signal and then it turns the pump back on. Not sure if that's how Toyota does it, but it's how most efi engines I've had do it.

Toyota does not use a key on prime, the fuel pump only runs during cranking and after the engine starts.

I had a similar issue, I was shotgunning all kinds of parts at it.
Fp, crank/ cam position sensors, battery,
I think finally a new MAF. Solved my issue
