I had a bald eagle fly across the road in front of me this morning. It had something in its beak, maybe a mouse. Pretty neat.

Look for sunny cool days and clear cold nights through the weekend. The high today will be in the 46-52 degree range… then expect lows 50s tomorrow and over the weekend. Lows will remain below freezing for most of the state each morning through Monday; mostly between 26 and 32 degrees. These values are a good 10-15 degrees below average for mid to late November in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: Dry weather continues Monday through Wednesday with a slow warming trend… temperatures reach the low 60s by Wednesday. The next chance of rain will come late in the week, sometime in the Thursday-Friday time frame. Model consistency has not been good concerning details of the system, which is to be expected 7-10 days out. The latest global global model runs have backed off on the idea of the risk of strong/severe storms… See the daily Weather Briefing video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet and tropical storm formation is not expected through early next week. The hurricane season ends at the end of the month.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Expect clear and cold conditions for the high school playoff games Friday night with temperatures falling from the mid 40s at kickoff, into the upper 30s by the second half.

Saturday, Alabama will host Austin Peay at Bryant-Denny Stadium (11:00a CT kickoff)… the sky will be sunny with temperatures rising from near 49 degrees at kickoff into the mid 50s by the final whistle.

Auburn will host Western Kentucky at Jordan-Hare Stadium (3:00p CT kickoff)… it will be a sunny day; about 55 degrees at kickoff, falling into the upper 40s by the four quarter.

Saturday night, UAB travels to Baton Rouge to take on LSU (8:00p CT kickoff)… expect a cloudy sky with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees during the game. A passing shower can’t be ruled out during the game.

ON THIS DATE IN 1927: A tornado (at times to 260 yards wide) cut a seventeen-mile path through Alexandria, Virginia across the District of Columbia from the Navy yard to Benning Rd. and 19th St. NE and northeast to East Riverdale, Maryland. This storm injured 31 people. The tornado struck the Naval Air Station where a wind gust of 93 mph was recorded.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: An F4 tornado moved across Walker County, from northeast from Cross Roads, 6 miles northwest of Jasper, to 1 mile north of Manchester. A new ranch house was picked up, blown apart and scattered. Three people were killed in that home. The fourth death occurred in another home.

ON THIS DATE IN 2013: An unusually powerful storm system spun up five dozen tornadoes from the Great Lakes to the Tennessee Valley. Two EF4 twisters struck Illinois, hitting the communities of Washington and New Minden.

No records so far… Birmingham’s record low for November 18 is 20, set in 1959.

Alabama’s weather won’t change much through the weekend with partly to mostly sunny cool days and clear cold nights. Highs in the 50-54 degree range today and tomorrow, falling back into the upper 40s Sunday. Morning lows remain below freezing, generally in the 20s.

NEXT WEEK: Monday morning will feature another freeze, but a warming trend begins Tuesday, and by Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day afternoon temperatures rise into the low 60s. Forecast confidence remains low due to model inconsistency; for now we are leaving the forecast dry through Wednesday. Showers are possible on Thanksgiving Day, followed by cooler and drier air Friday and over the following weekend (November 26-27). At one point a couple of days ago global models hinted at some risk of strong to severe storms here around Thursday or Friday, but for now that idea is off the table. See the daily Weather Briefing video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: An estimated F2 tornado moved across the Birmingham metro from Ensley to Tarrant. After touching down in Ensley, the tornado proceded Northeast through the Pratt area and North Birmingham and eventually into Tarrant. Many homes between 22nd and 24th streets on 35th and 36th Avenues North were damaged with numerous large trees down around the area. The Birmingham Airport reported winds of 69 mph and sited the funnel just to the northwest. Damage in Tarrant was mainly to the industrial area. One person was killed and 35 were injured.
