A personal experience on this. I found the nVidia octopus connector/adapter, well, stupid. It not only looks terrible but there is no audible or tactile click when fully inserted. The strain relief discussed in the video is a piece of nylon tape that doesn't hold its shape. Overall, it's a bad design that leads to inexperienced builders not fully seating the cable and potentially pulling out the line when they put the side of the case back on the computer.

I now have a custom 4 x 8 pin to 8+4 pin PCI-E adapter built for my specific power supply in a custom length from cablemod. Being as point-blank as tech Jesus tends to be, he shouldn't talk about a cable he's not yet laid hands on. Not only is the line delivered in quality packaging free of foreign debris with clean contacts, but it is also superior in design to the adapter from nVidia. A plastic shield extends down the cable, which provides stress relief for the line instead of the unsupported tape on the nVidia connector. The wires are 16 AWG, not 18 AWG or 24 AWG, which may be overkill, but it's in the specification that the cables should be 16 AWG. Each eight-pin PCI-E connecter is hooked up to the sense wiring individually, meaning the card can detect if one is not fully plugged into the PSU. Most importantly, the adapter clicks audibly and with a tactile response when connected, which is critical to allow the builder to know it's inserted properly.

4080/4090 buyers willing to spend $1.2-2K on a card would be mentally incompetent to use the adapter for anything more than a temporary solution. Buy a cablemod PCI-E cable. It's worth it.

Point blank, nVidia should provide a link to Cablemod and some sort of discount for 40 series buyers to fund the purchase of a better cable with a better connector.

Thanks for that insight. It’s good to hear from someone with first hand knowledge and not just relying on tech reviewers for things.

Does the cablemod connector make an audible click when inserted fully?

So my PC has always been connected via Ethernet, at the old house I had a 3’ run from the router to the tower and with this house I’ve had to run power line adapters, with the old wifi speed I didn’t see any bottleneck. Tested it with the new Gigabit internet and I’m seeing 3.7 Mbps down and .8 or so up. So while I’m putting off running a hard line from the wing of the house with the router to the main upstairs where my PC is I decided to get a wifi card.

    Gonna be fast AF boi!!

Installing it right now, I need to get some canned air while I’m out, a negative pressure house will make a PC nasty very quickly even with filters.

So after an hour of playing around with it I figured out that the adapter must be installed in the lowest 1x slot to work, I’ve been fighting/cussing this thing trying every other slot because I didn’t want it super close to my SSD.
I’m thrilled with this speed, I’d still like to go Ethernet later but this is going to be very good for video uploads, game downloads, and everything else that I use.

It feels good to be able to tackle stuff like this and not have it take days.

I know that feeling. Did a 20gb update today in 13 minutes that used to take 3 hours

Uploading 4K video the upload speed is much appreciated, I think we’ll see upload speeds become something that is really thought about as cellphones get higher res cameras, live-streaming becomes more popular, and more people are uploading large files than ever.

I think the days of having a 100+ Mbps down system but limited to 10 Mbps up are getting close to being over.

    Hope so!

Not that I upload often at all but would be nice for in the future.

Posted my speed the other day, let me see if I can find it...

    Uploads are way slow.

It would drive me up the wall having an upload that small with a respectable download like that.

On fiber there’s no reason to limit upload speed, the communication isn’t limited by the bandwidth of the medium but by the transceivers which are, by nature, the same on each end meaning the same speed up as down. On coaxial cable the medium is often the limiting factor and the receive and transmit tech is different, so to hit the speeds companies want to advertise they often sacrifice upload speeds. Until fiber to the door is universal, there will still be crappy upload speeds on coax deployed installations.

I feel like our office internet should be better than this, granted it’s through a VPN and I’m not sure how much that effects it.
We run a POS system that is server based though and I’m almost positive that it’s a remote server and not local.

Cox isn't any better with upload speeds. My plan is 500/10. If I upgrade to 1000 down, I'll only get an extra 5 up.

Not that it matters much but, any reason why some 3DMark benchmarks will have my I5 run at 4.2ghz (boost) and other runs at 4.4ghz (boost)?

It's a 12400, running the exact same bench, on a different day. Sometimes, no changes at all to anything..and I say sometimes cause I've only messed with GPU settings a hair. Some runs no changes at all to said GPU though.

CPU has maxed out at 46 degrees on any and every run.

Boost frequency on 12th Gen is power, thermal, and bin limited. I'd gamble you're seeing the chip drop to 4.2 based on slightly higher case temperature on some runs.
