I just sold a 71 Scout last week and I agree, that wheel was huge! Took about 17 turns lock to lock.
Not much space behind it for the larger man either.
The wipers have separate left and right motors and controls so the passenger could operate theirs independently.

 

I had a mid 70's Scout. First thing I did was buy a smaller steering wheel.
I think I could've driven it off a cliff and it wouldn't hurt it.

 

I'm not sure which one I'd be, depends on mod probably...

They had very robust power plants, the V8 engines used in Scouts, pickups and the Travelall were the same ones used in school busses and the Load Star medium duty trucks.
