Conversion of Oil housings

Hello all! I found this video talking about going from plastic to metal oil housings. It was actually on the 4R form. It was interesting to watch, but can't a person take the guts from the plastic can and put it in the aluminum with no issues? I'm pretty sure these are serviceable, but he claims they are not and to get a new one if it comes apart. Do we have part numbers for the guts?

I know this guy is very good at what he does, but it seems like misinformation. Am I wrong to think that?

I currently have 2 Jowett Performance housings on order, 1 for the Taco and 1 for the 4R. I plan to just swap the insides and move along.

 

I swapped that spring loaded valve and the drain plug from my original plastic housing to a factory Toyota metal housing. No issues.

 

this part number uses the same filter as a tacoma, and has the same internals.

It’s a liability issue. I watched the video too. If the internals are not seated properly , as he said, if the filter gets clogged, the bypass may not open properly and oil starvation might occur. He mentioned this engine is sensitive to low oil pressure . You may do what you think is right. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work if done RIGHT.

 

Why not leave well enough alone? The plastic is made very durable and if installed properly should last a very long time. If it needs to be replaced it’s about $50 bucks.

 

What exactly is this? Please Fill me in cause I’m about to change over to the metal housing on my first oil change

 

It's not misinformation, it's just very hard to dispel the urban legend of "plastic cheap, metal amazing" when it comes to this filter housing.

There's a lot of factors here, and for most people with their head on straight switching to a metal housing won't be an issue. But, on the flipside, it's nothing but holistic wallet lightening. You're risking severe engine damage to get... ... the benefits of a different colored housing.
(Spoiler alert: depending on the specific materials, that FRP plastic may actually have a higher yield strength than Aluminum)

I've stuck with the plastic on my 4Runner. Think about it this way. If you gall the threads with a metal housing, you've buggered up both the housing AND an attachment to your engine block that I'm pretty sure the engine needs to be pulled to replace.
Hamfist a plastic one and... you've broken the plastic. You replace the plastic, and the plastic has not destroyed the threads on your block attachment.

TL;DR the swap is low risk, no reward.

If you manage to break or bugger up that bypass valve so that it doesn't work anymore? It's gonna be an exciting day in your journal bearings. They'll throw a party with lots of silver glitter!

Unlikely, but not impossible. Like I said, low risk.

 

Why is this more or less likely with a metal housing?

 

Because the metal housings come equipped with the wrong internals, and to make the metal housing work you swap plastic housing internals into a metal housing. Taking the housing internals apart requires spreading thin metal tabs apart which weakens the bypass valve. Does it weaken the valve enough to fail? There's no objective measure! (How hard did ya bend it?? Was it too much?) Most people skate, some people don't.

 

you know toyota make a metal one for this motor right? they put them on the camry, and sienna for sure. no need to swap anything. buy it from toyota, it is made for our application. Ski

 

You’re absolutely spot on there sir. CCN only mentioned not to use aftermarket non Toyota brand aluminum with questionable quality .

 

Correction, a metal housing made for a different oil filter, has incorrect internals. The number I posted is for the same oil filter as a tacoma, and thus has the same internals. Its off a 2gr-fe, link for the filter here, note the "what this fits section" includes tacomas 2015-2022.

I just watched the video. It's been a while, but I don't recall having to break or bend anything to get the valve out. I did eyeball the two housings and found the tube to sit at the same height, same # of threads on the housing, etc. I swapped bc a couple of the ears had broken off my plastic housing.

 

Only issue I see here if the engine has issue with regard to oil starvation and the tech noticed an aluminum filter housing. Would you risk it?

 

Aha! Good catch, yes I was mistaken because I was thinking of it in terms of the 4Runner, which still has the chonky old 4.0 that takes the different height filters and has no applicable direct swap.

So I revise my statement:
If you use an OEM 3.5 V6 housing- No risk, no reward.

 

Great point, given how eager some dealers are to deny warranty claims I'm sure that tech would get more than a few pats on the back from his managers to go AHA!!! YOU HAVE THE FORBIDDEN HOUSING! DENIED!!

 

Out of warranty BBY. Plus I got my truck used and would say "don't know you sold it to me like that" and dare them to prove me wrong.

 

Waste of time and money mod, the plastic housing was engineered for that motor. If you know what you’re doing you should have no issue with the plastic version. Like someone said earlier they are about $50 dollars to replace. Go aluminum if you want, might get you 2 more horse power.
