I know I am going to get a lot of heat for this but I changed my oil for the first time about two weeks ago and just realized today that I made a huge mistake. I drained my transmission oil instead of the engine oil and added 5.5qts of new engine oil in addition to the old stuff that's in there. I noticed some shifting issues today and realized I messed up bad. What can I expect and how bad is this issue? Can I just drain the engine oil, add the correct amount of new engine oil, and add new transmission oil? If not how much will it cost to fix it? (Edit: I've already driven about 450 miles)

I did too, 7 years ago when I did my first oil change after the dealer free changes ended. Taco tranny drain is same place as my f150 oil drain was. 80,000 miles later motor & tranny are both still good. I did only drive 30 miles like that though.

I drained the oil down but paid dealer to service the tranny. I wish you luck

I'll post it before someone else does... This Needs To Be a STICKY. Happens too often.
I can't comment on your tranny but... how the hell do you not drain your oil, add 5.5 qt. and not find it over filled?
Not trying to be a d*%$ but that's just standard operating procedure.

    Good luck.

Yup, the only thing you can do is fix what’s wrong and move on. If something got damaged you’ll eventually find out. You’re not the only one to do this. Look for a classic thread from krazie sj if you need a good laugh.

Transmission fluid is red for older Yota's; does that apply to 2nd Gen and above?

If you haven’t noticed a problem in 450 miles, you probably don’t have a problem.

It happens, we all make mistakes.
Learn from it and drive on:thumbsup:

It’s brown if it hasn’t been changed in 100k miles.

Do a search on transmission fluid level. Your truck may not have a transmission dipstick.

    Mistakes happen, owning is big.

That said, the trans isn't simple to fill and if you drained it, it would have serious issues driving and going into gear.

Also typically when the engine is double filled it usually causes misfires.

    What gave away the error?

I would just take it to a shop and eat the costs.

I hadn't had any issues for about two weeks (~450miles) but today I went on the highway and got up to higher speeds and it felt like my truck was stuck in a gear, wasn't shifting properly, and the RPMs were getting higher than usual. That's when I realized I probably did something wrong on the oil change. Went back and looked through some videos and research to realize that I drained the wrong oil pan.

I've read so many of these threads that the first time I crawled under the truck I triple checked which was which, pointing at oil pan and trans pan like it was a game of eeny-meeny.

I can see how the mistake is made, the oil plug is concealed behind a cover on some trims. Granted it's easy to to distinguish when you look to see what each pan is hanging onto. But I get it. I can see how people would pull the first plug they see that's within the general vicinity, and that's usually not the oil plug.

2 weeks and 450 miles with 11 quarts of oil in the engine and low trans fluid.
I would think the you’d have noticed sooner. Impressive none the less.
And no offense to you man.

    Again, it happens.

As long as all the fluids are at the correct level, and you have no problems, there isn’t much you can do.
Again, I stress the fluid levels should be at proper level, the A750 can be hard to fill correctly if you haven’t done it before.

    HALP!!!

OP, 450 miles I would think there is serious damage done. But hey, just drain and refill both and keep driving if no issues show up. Just keep in mind years from now if you start having issues, this is what cause it.

Not sure what you mean by that, but by all means post a link to it...

The day I signed up for TW was the day I almost got myself fired for reading through 15 pages of Krazy's lift thread and then way too many pages of the oil change thread. If it happened before that, I haven't yet seen it.
