    Exactly

This engine series has been around a while. The FRN (Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon) housing is much more resilient than the piece of shit die cast aluminum housing, which is why the Tacoma received the UPGRADED housing.

The only issue the FRN housing has is some people are too stupid to reinstall it without over tightening it. Some will make ridiculous claims that it (over)tightens itself from heat cycling.

That only happens when you do this mod with a aftermarket cold air intake.

Lol, I happen to have some "FRN" guitar picks that date back to the 70's that are damn near indestructible! They called it "FIBYLON" back then. I play these picks hard and it is definitely some tough shit!

disagree. I replaced all the plastic in my truck to make it better. Dashboard, door panels, fender flares, heck even the center console is now polished 6061 Aluminum. You’d be amazed how much better the truck is as no way the Toyota engineers knew what they were doing.

the composite bed was the hardest to replace though. My new bed is a forged one piece design that can take any beating you throw at it. No more plastic bs.

Never challenge the toyota god, especially on tw...its blasphemy.
I recently did an oil change. There's nothing wrong with the composite canister housing that comes on these tacoma's long as you use the right wrench not over torquing it.

We can agree to disagree, Im not saying there are no crappy engineered parts, but changing the oil filter housing to aluminum is a waste of time. There is no gain from this mod.it’s a pretty basic maintenance item and if done correctly should last. Toyota’s been around for 80 something years I kinda think they know what there manurfacturing.

Oh well if it’s Amazon’s Choice it must be good. What a joke.

If the aluminum conversion is a genuine Toyota replacement part I don't see the harm. The plastic doesn't bother me as much as a cheap amazon knockoff aluminum one does. Amazons choice scares me too.

I watch that guy on YouTube on a regular basis. He seems like a SME (subject matter expert) on Toyotas. I was thinking of doing the switch to metal. After watching that video two days ago I am sticking with the plastic one that came on my 2022.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Well, the experts at my Toyota dealer overtightened the plastic one on my truck. It broke when they tried to get it off. They replaced it with the aluminum one. I guess because the aluminum one is a piece of shit. (Sarcasm) Service writer told me they see more problems with the plastic ones than the aluminum version. Said nothing about their ham-fisted techs. I saw pieces of the plastic one and they were brittle. Maybe the cold weather affects them? Who knows.

Toyota's engineers make mistakes like any engineer. Maybe this is one. Maybe it wasn't engineering but a bean counter decision. My suspicion is that they switched to plastic because it saved them a few grams of weight, not because it is superior in any way. It's probably the same reason they have plastic intake manifolds.

I've yet to see anyone mention the long term issues with plastic parts on engine applications, in that, as they age, and go through hundreds, if not thousands of heat soak, cold soak cycles, the stuff becomes increasingly brittle, leading to eventual failure (sometime in a not so easy place to take care of it). For components like the oil filter housing, or cooling system parts, I'll always look for metal parts to replace plastic ones wherever possible.
