Oh that’s not mine, sorry. I need to make room for tires and a few other things. I was going to copy his (which I’m not doing quite the same anymore). Mine is just a standard ol’ long travel truck soon to be minus a couple wheel wells.

How strict is the visual emissions inspection here? I’m going to be coming up on my first one this year and debating how permanent my new intake is going to be.

For example let’s say I have the factory air box, factory filter, and factory intake tube but instead of pulling air from the wheel well it comes from the cowl? Or let’s say I just remove the new intake pipe to pass and the hole is on the wrong side (original hole is sealed and now has a hole on a different side) will they even notice that?

Depends on the tech. But on the airflow side before the factory filter it shouldn't be a problem. I doubt anyone will even notice if its still under a mudguard.

At that point I may or may not have any wheel wells left. I just don’t want to have to leave the factory hole open because I think I’ll have it blocked with something. As much as I like building things just for inspections.

Air intakes/cold air induction are considered a part of the smog control system. Some have CARB exemption stickers and as long as it’s applied, you’re good to go.

But all you’ve done is move the intake.so far, that is not a modification that requires an exemption.

California has been cracking down on smog shops. If items are found to be missing in the visual inspection or testing is not done exactly to plan, shops can be cited and or lose their smog licensing which is why there are so few shops that look the other way during the visual inspection. Especially if you are a first time customer.

BTW, if a shop has been cited recently, inspectors will likely keep going back with different issues. Sometimes several times during the week.

LOL.... Went with matte gunmetal F5. Needed to get rid of the spacers. These are supposed to kick out just a little more, so hopefully can do an alignment again to get within specs without rubbing on my frame at full lock.

I have a relocate on air from the firewall. Guys here want to see it located in factory spot. No biggie for me as all I do is put factory tube back on that location. 5 min swap for inspection.

I ran across this website today. It is a catalog of sorts of forest service campgrounds that you might find interesting. I'm not sure how deep into the forest it goes but there you go.

Always wondered if adding a snorkel is an instant fail. Guess need to ask f it comes with a CARB sticker before buying

I guess I should just keep it reversible just in case. Better than risking a fail.

Something else you can do is ask the smog technician whether he can do a quick visual inspection prior to the actual test. That way, you at least have a chance to un-fuck things before the actual test.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Adding a snorkel is not an instant fail. If a smog tech says it is (which you probably wont find one that does) they are an idiot, go somewhere else.

You are not modifying any part of the smog system when adding a snorkel. Smog is considered from the air box to the engine. You are modifying BEFORE the air box.

I don't think you'll find a snorkel with a CARB sticker, because CARB does not apply to a snorkel.

Just making jokes. I agree @El Taco Diablo that it shouldn’t matter where the air is coming from as long as the air filter on looks factory or has a CARB sticker.

After doing some reading about CA smog inspection, I don’t think my truck will pass safety anyway. For some reason I thought they only had emissions here. Oops.
