Toyota sensors don't fail very often, your not gona change the crank sensor on a 4.0L on the side of the road anyway.
I'm not sure if the 4.0L will run on just the cam sensors or not, guess I need to test that :D

    Tell you what man.
You can help OP out then.
    I’m done here.

My point was, the file you posted was not for the 4.0.
And had OP used that, he would have gotten different result.

    Good luck OP.

Please lets not get into an argument, that won't help anyone.
Maybe we can get a mod to move this to the 2nd gen forum?

Or OP could start a new thread in the 2nd Gen forum.
Where the information will be relevant to the actual truck being discussed.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/forums/2nd-gen-tacomas-2005-2015.5/

After all, this is in the 1st Gen forum. Which probably started the confusion to start with.

No I appreciate your trying to help him.....

You had the correct info....and mine was off....

I was just trying to steer in right direction.....

someone can always jump in that's smarter than me.....
I'm okay with that.....thats how you learn.....

I won’t say I’m smarter than you by any means.
And I will agree, we can all learn something here.

We are all good man. Let’s start fresh and wait for OP to decide what his next step is going to be.
Maybe he has a friend with a scan tool that can read live data.
Because the Crank Sensor on these trucks is no fun to get to.

I, along with others, we’re involved in a similar thread once before.
The OP threw numerous parts at it, and specifically stated the Crank Sensor was very hard to change.

I just don’t want to see OP waste time or money.

My gen1(98 dlx) will not connect to a scanner if engine is not running......

I have the 'blue driver' BT dongle.......

Found this out when I had my ignition switch fail.......

No worries, I'm just here to try to help and educate people to avoid just throwing parts at a problem instead of testing & verifying what part is bad and getting it right the first time.
I have learned more about 2nd gens because I own one and can do testing on it to see what known good is, I don't know too much about first gens so I don't typically hang out here much.
I don't get to actually work on Tacoma's much as I get very few in the shop where I work but I have done alot of tests and experiments on my own to try to help others.

Hmm that's interesting, I wonder if it's an issue with the scanner. Never had a vehicle that wouldn't communicate key on engine off but would with it running although I have had some that would lose communication during cranking.

mine wont connect at all.....not codes....no nothing....
just keeps trying and never does.....

Willing to bet...if I swap out to that extra ecm I have.....it would do the same.....

I just figured it was a gen1 thing......

Maybe just have to have fancier one.........

That one can do basic live data which includes RPM.

Ok when I get home today I’ll understand the scan tool better and post! So I’m looking for RPM while I’m cranking the engine right?

Yes, you should see around 150-200RPM while cranking.

I still have my old Actron laying around somewhere, that was the first scanner I owned. That's been 15 years ago or more but it looks very similar to the one you have.
I have much better pro level scanners now.
