Just wanted to share with all of you that I messaged the fella that runs the grimmjeeper.com gear/rpm calculator and got him to add the RC60F, RC61F, RC62F.

It’s easy enough to memorize the ratios and type them in, but at least now all we have to do is scroll (kind of a lot of scrolling since we’re in the T’s!)

also had him add the automatic (AC760E/F) but that don’t pertain to us manual folk.

Covers the Hilux (60), the 61 (I forgot what that comes in but it’s mentioned in the RC60F thread), and the 3rd gen 6MT (62)

the 60 & 61 are very similar and have all the same ratios except 5th, but I figured why not request him to enter both while he’s at it.

    the 5MT is the R155

the RA60(F) and RA61(F) are 2nd gen Taco and FJ 6MTs as far as I’m aware. The R155, RA60 and RA61 are all in the calculator already.

    Not the 3rd gen 5MT, the R156F. Ratios a little different--larger 1st and maybe 2nd and a smaller 5th.

    The 155 ratios I saw matched the 3rd gen 5MT. 3.95, 2.06, 1.44, 1.00, 0.81.

That's what I saw at first as well, but the attached technical document from the 2016 rollout shows a different set of ratios for model year 2016+. A member here, can't recall his username now, counted the teeth on the R156F during a transmission swap and confirmed the larger numbers.

It's not really important, but I like to stand up for the 3rd gen 5 speed when I can.

Interesting. I always saw the document from Toyota for 2016 that listed the 4 sets of ratios for the V6, 4cyl, manual and auto combos. Those matched the older R155. Guess that document was not up to date. More research shows the R156 to be correct and it has those newer ratios with the 4.31 1st and 0.79 5th.

Maybe I'll ask Mr. Jeeper to add those in too. For when and if I plot out going to titanic 31" tires.

    Nope.

And can we stuff this R156F into a 2nd gen 5 speed? If we wanted to bleed money for minimal change? Or do the bolts line up differently?

The deeper gearing in first second and 5th would definitely be worth it.

As far as the bell housings and bolt patterns matching up.... That's going to require some more document comparison :D

Since both four cylinders are identical engines though, the 2TR-FE, I'm going to say yes you can.

The reason I said that was because of an official document by Toyota. Apparently that was wrong but that’s all my comment was based on.

All good, I'm just putting that stuff in direct from our service manuals here. They're live docs so they stay updated. Pretty neat.

Slow at this afternoon, hence TW

Interesting on 5th, not sure how much I'd like 0.788 vs 0.81 given how little punch the I4 has trying to hold cruise uphill with stock 4.30. Now with a regear to 4.56 or 4.88, the 0.788 is a tiny bit better. Probably unnoticeable.

More beef in 1st could be fun though. Second going 2.06 to 2.33 seems like it'd be noticeable too, better for any sort of lower speed situation and not much loss, 3rd is really good at 25-40.

I'd like to drive it sometime now that I know it's different. Though my specific 2nd gen, being a RC, really drives like a compact pickup from the '80's which is why I like it so much.

Interesting to see that the gears became wider ratio in the later Tacomas. From what I can looked up the gear ratios in the 2004 4-cylinder Tacoma where
    1: 3.954
    2: 2.141
    3: 1.384
    4: 1.000
    5: 0.810
    R: 4.091
    R&P 3.583 2wd or 3.909 4wd

I get a kick out of that gear set every time I drive because the gear spreads are so much like the old aircooled VW wide ratio 4-speed gears (old VW missing 5th). My beach buggy has a Bug transaxle assembled with an early 3rd gear and late 4th gear. It seems to me you really wouldn't want much wider unless you have more power or less weight. That gearing is:
    1: 3.78
    2: 2.06
    3: 1.32
    4: 0.93

5th only really works on flat interstates at sea level. Great for driving between LA and Phoenix, if you must, but that's about it.
