AMC entered the muscle car area far later (1968) than the big 3 and with far less money to spend.

Rambler actually produced one of the very first "muscle cars", The 327 cubic inch 255HP/345 TQ engine in the mid size Rebel, the second quickest car sold in US for 1957 - #1 was the fuel injected Corvette.

The muscle car formula of a mid size car with an engine from the full size line became common in the 1960's but AMC did it first with the Rebel.
