Better mileage in city than hwy

Is anyone else seeing much better gas mileage around town compared to long trips on the highway?

Monday-Friday I’m seeing around 18-19 mpg in town.

On trips on the highway I’m averaging around 16 mph.
Most speed limits around me are 70 or 75.

 

I do not, my best is highway

 

*Im not expecting great mileage. I know it’s a truck.

just thought it was odd because usually it’s the other way around.

 

My wallet doesn't like going over 70 mph. If I keep it at 60-65mph with stock tires and no canoe rack I get 20mpg average a tank , if I lead foot it at 75mph I only get 16-18mpg. If I add my 33" mud terrains and canoe rack , anything over 45mph gets 15mpg.

 

It does seem that driving anything over about 68 MPH the MPG's seem to start going down. At least that is something I've noticed. But generally you should get better MPG on the highway than in the city.

 

I've hit 24.9 oh highway at 70-75 mph for stretches -

 

OP are you using adaptive cruise control on the highway? That uses a grip of gas in stock form.

 

It all depends how fast you are going on the highway. 70+ and my MPGs suck. I get best MPGs doing 60-65 mph about 20-21 MPGs.

City I can do 18 all day long.

I’m not stock and carry about 600# of extra weight.

 

I get the best MPG when my truck doesn't leave my garage. You should try it.

 

Could be you are driving in poor highway conditions for fuel economy. High wind, hard acceleration.

Conversely 18-19 in town is reasonable. Especially if you are doing 40-50mph for stretches, not accelerating hard, etc.

Edge case where city will beat highway, but with the wind in Texas, it is possible.

 

How are you measuring?

 

I get about the same in city as highway or slightly more in the city. If you're going under 80 on the highway around here you're getting passed by 18 wheelers.

 

I do, but my commute is about half a 55 mph highway and 25 mph city streets, so I've always gotten better than the EPA rated MPG for city driving, regardless of the vehicle. As others have said, once you hit about 70 mph the MPGs really start dropping off.

 

I try not to use the cruise control because it’s always hunting gears for me at highway speed if it’s on.

 

Same. Going under 70 is not an option or else I’m getting honks and death stares.

 

On average, my mileage is identical to EPA estimates: 17 City / 21 Highway (6-MT) while driving “normally”. That is, keeping pace with traffic and passing the occasional douchebag. It is possible to get better or worse depending on how you drive. I once got 24 driving a steady 60 in 6th gear = 2,000 RPM.

 

I’m averaging 16.5 mostly highway. Before I put new tires on I was getting 19-20.
What tires are you running?

 

Hybrids get 'reverse' MPG numbers like you.

Maybe you have a test mule.

 

My 2001 3.4 TRD gets 15 highway 17 city.

 

Ppl have different definitions of what a “city” is.
