Stainless steel uni-ball for TC UCA 05+ Tacoma

For the guys who are in the salt belt DO NOT buy TC UCA's with chrome uni-balls. They can pit very quickly even if they are properly maintained. Camburg, All Pro, and DSMS's UCA's come with stainless uniballs (I know for a fact that DSMS uses the same exact stainless steel uniballs I have listed below in their production line).

If your going TC then be sure to get them with a stainless uni-ball. They will last much longer without pitting and should be a small up-charge.

Here are mine after less then 6 months.



For the guys who need replacement uni-balls like I do:

Stainless uni-ball's are manufactured by F.K. Bearings. Part #

$55 wssx16t spherical bearing with teflon, 1" (1-3/8 wide), 1 pack

wssx16t.

I bought these direct through TC, but they can be found on the web for similar pricing.




The spring clips were a PITA to get out do to some rust, so I sprayed them down with some deep creep and let it soak in.




Once the spring clips were removed I gently tapped the old balls out with a hard rubber mallet.

Here they are after I took them out.

New balls, new bolts, and new top collars compared to the old ones.









putting the new ones in without the proper tools





hollowed out the bottom piece of wood so the uniball wasn't touching in order to suck the ball flush.



then used the old bolt to suck it the additional 1/4" so the spring clip could be installed





torque nut to to 100 ft/lbs

Yea that's around what I found. Ughhhh this is yet again on the "to buy" list

 

You don't need to replace them until they get sloppy. The pits will just increase the rate it takes for them to get some slop in them. I'm going to see if I can remove mine with a piece of all thread and some washers. Home made press actually puller FTW

 

May I sugest using 2 sockets and a threaded rod? Some guy on TTORA did this but for his LCA bushings.

 

Sounds like a winner to me if I have a socket that big. Not sure how big of an impact socket I have. Worst case Ill just rig something up. Didn't get to it today but tomorrow will be much warmer so Ill tackle it then.

 

Anyone know if All Pro UCA's use Stainless or Chrome?

Me thinks I'll be purchasing a set of those right quick as soon as they put a price listing.

Winter Salt isn't friendly to Uniballs. Even without the pitting.

 

I still wanna know how they are attaching this dust cap. I do not think it is being offered from AP as it has come up in the past on other forums. I took a good look at making some for mine and it's not such an easy task with off the shelf stuff so I gave up.

 

I asked about the dustcaps when I ordered some parts last week and was told $35 a piece for them so I believe they just need to update the website.

what does pitting mean?

 

Pitting is caused from the salt. You can see in this pic the little indentions, or "pitting" rather, that the salt has caused on the round uni-ball.

 

Save yourself $60+ shipping and RTV some PVC end caps to the top. I will be doing this in winter.

 

I wasnt gonna pay that either. I may turn down some PVC caps so they fit in nice and snug and do like you said...

 

Just check them at full droop so they clear the top bolt/collar without hitting. Hell drill it out, throw a zerk in it, and walla, a $20 set of dust caps you can lube without removing.

 

I am running the All-Pro LT kit, there uniball arms have recessed top bolts so there is no misalignment hanging off the top to clear, just a small insert on top which continues the "sphere" of the uni-ball.
