I just got this same tool for the truck. It's going to live in the onboard tool kit as I plan on using it for anything and everything - that it's meant to be used for.

Been a Makita guy since they pioneered cordless screw guns back in the early 80s. Those 9.6v long skinny batteries were cool as shit. Now I’ll go look for their impact. Thank$

If you are carrying it with you all the time, get whatever brand you already have batteries for. If you have other Dewalt tools... I have their 20 volt 3/8 cordless impact. Zips off lugs easily, and is compact enough to live under the rear seat with a 6 amp battery.

    I vote the M18 Mid-Torque.

    I have the Milwaukee M18 1/2” High Torque, M18 1/2” Mid Torque, M18 3/8”, and the M12 Stubby 3/8”

I use the Mid-Torque the most for Suspension and Wheels.
Mostly because I have the extra available Torque if needed.

That little M12 is impressive. It will take lugs of easy on a Tacoma.
And be CAREFUL it’s size will fool you. You’ll over torque small stuff if you aren’t careful.
Stuff like intake bolts and such. For stuff like that I usually go with the M12 ratchet and do it by hand.

Any of these have a clutch so you can’t apply 170ft./#? I guess zip them snug and the torque wrench to 85 would work.

Honestly just using a deep well socket by hand (no ratchet) is the quickest way and also no way to cross thread. Once all the nuts are snug, drop to ground and torque with a proper torque wrench.

The M12 has Mode 4 which stops once it senses the bolt is snug.
Which isn’t too snug, however you can pull the trigger again and get it “more snug”.
I don’t use this feature much, but it’s there.

I think the regulator M18 Compact Impact has a maximum of 20 ft/lbs on Mode 4.
Never used it thought. I picked it up while it was a “free tool” when I bought my 6.0 battery kit.

That’s what I do. I get them started by hand, zip until they meet the lug seat (or if it kicks sooner because of an issue) and torque by hand. I won’t let it kick more than once and usually I can feel when it’s going to happen and I stop just before then.

Yes, the 9.6V screw guns/drills were great tools and long lasting.

The Makita tools always seem to be more ergonomic than the yellow brand to me.

Once you have invested it battery and charger infrastructure buying the actual tools is *cough* almost economical.

Yup. TTI owns Ryobi. And they used to make craftsman before Stanley bought the craftsman name. It's kinda funny (sad?) actually when you realize just how short the list of tool mfg actually is.

i would really suggest the m18 over the m12. more oomph. i like my m12 stuff for normal screws and hardware install, but for anything needing some real torque, it should have at least a 5.0 battery or higher.

We have mostly the M12 line at work, with a coupla M18 here and there. I like them, but that battery release could be better IMO lol

My 1/2-inch Makita impact is pretty expensive, but it gets those swollen FCA nuts off my Jeep really quick. I had one so swollen, nothing but a chisel and a torch could get that off. I know will make quick work of the Toyota lug nuts.

You can get a 5.0 battery for the M12 if that's the only complaint. But I hear ya on the oomph.
